The budget wars are about to begin. Yet, in January, moderate Senate Democrats offered an olive branch as the Trump tax cuts expired: they’d be willing to work with Republicans on tax cuts without going through the reconciliation process. They promised they would deliver enough votes to break filibusters (via Politico):

Democrats in Congress are growing louder with threats to force a shutdown in March to put the brakes on President Trump’s and Elon Musk’s efforts to overhaul the federal government by freezing spending and dismantling agencies.

A growing number of Democratic lawmakers think the March 14 deadline for funding the government gives them the best leverage to pressure Trump and Musk to back off their plans to pick apart the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and other agencies.

Senate Democrats launched an online form on their website for public servants to report cases of the Trump administration acting out of line, particularly regarding the conduct of the Department of Government Efficiency, which is run by Elon Musk. 

“Whistleblowers are a vital part of Congressional oversight to hold the administration accountable,” says the description of the online form.

Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.), the ranking member of the Senate Homeland Security Committee, said they are launching a portal for whistleblowers to expose wrongdoing and abuses of power in the Trump administration.

Senate Democrats, led by Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-New York) and Sen. Gary Peters (D-Michigan), have set up a whistleblower complaint portal for federal workers to submit any reports of what they see as unlawful activities in their respective agencies in response to Elon Musk and his group’s efforts to downsize the federal government.

President-elect Trump, Democratic lawmakers and the Supreme Court are on a collision course over restricting birthright citizenship, which Trump has identified as a top priority for his incoming administration.

Republican lawmakers on Capitol Hill say the 14th Amendment’s language, which grants all people born in the United States citizenship, is being exploited in a way the amendment’s framers never anticipated.
