A renowned NGO that was invited by Venezuelan officials to monitor Sunday's presidential poll has said the election "cannot be considered democratic".

The US-based Carter Center deployed 17 experts and observers to Venezuela after being asked to monitor the election by the National Electoral Council (CNE).

On Monday, the CNE - which is dominated by government allies - declared President NicolĂĄs Maduro the winner, but the result has been disputed by the opposition which says voting tallies show its candidate, Edmundo GonzĂĄlez, has won by a wide margin.

Sen. Rick Scott, R-Fla., is calling on the Biden-Harris administration to recognize Edmundo GonzĂĄlez as the "legitimate president-elect of Venezuela" after his conversation with Venezuelan opposition leader MarĂa Corina Machado.

According to Scott's office, since the election in Venezuela took place, the senator contacted the White House "repeatedly to schedule a call with President Biden."

The Organization of American States (OAS) is scheduled to hold a meeting on Wednesday on the results of the Venezuelan presidential election.

Electoral authorities claimed that Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s deeply unpopular president, had won a third term in Sunday’s election, sparking accusations that his authoritarian regime had committed massive fraud to steal victory from opposition candidate Edmundo González.

After hours of delays and uncertainty, Elvis Amoroso, president of the National Electoral Council and a close Maduro ally, appeared before journalists shortly after midnight on Monday. He declared that Maduro had won with 51% compared to 44% for GonzĂĄlez, with 80% of the votes counted.

QUITO, Ecuador -- The tiny and increasingly violence plagued country of Ecuador has for years served as a main conduit for migrants from Asia, the Middle East and Africa to begin the overland trek to the U.S. border. Now, amid a political shift here and a full court press by the Biden administration to staunch the flow of illegal migration, Ecuador is shutting its door, at least to the growing number of Chinese migrants using it as a trampoline to places like Texas, California and New York. On July 1,...

The United States is going to pay for flights and offer other help to Panama to remove migrants under an agreement signed July 1, as the Central American country’s new president has vowed to shut down the treacherous DariĂ©n Gap used by people traveling north to the United States.

The memorandum of understanding was signed during an official visit headed by Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to Panama for the inauguration July 1 of JosĂ© RaĂșl Mulino, the country’s new president.

The US and Panama have signed an agreement on immigration issues that aims to “close the passage of illegal migrants” through the DariĂ©n Gap, the Central American government announced Monday.

“In the agreement signed today by the Panamanian Foreign Minister Javier MartĂnez-Acha and the Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States Alejandro Mayorcas, the US government undertakes to cover the cost of the repatriation of immigrants who enter illegally through DariĂ©n,” the Panama government said in a statement.
