Republican Utah Gov. Spencer Cox signed a bill Tuesday to ban diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) departments at public universities and government-funded employers in the state, according to a press release. The legislation bans trainings that ā€œpromote differential treatmentā€ of individuals on the basis of sex and race and will eliminate offices that enforce the tenets of DEI. The law also appropriates funds for ā€œstudent success and supportā€ programs, which Cox said would ā€œhelp all Utah students succeed regardless of their background,ā€ according to a press release.

Utah Gov. Spencer Cox’s brow furrowed when he was asked about Sen. Mitt Romney spending $5,000 a day since the Jan. 6, 2021 riot at the U.S. Capitol to cover private security for his family.

It was among the bombshell accounts The Atlantic writer McKay Coppins has so far revealed in a recently published excerpt of the biography he’s writing about Romney’s last few years in office, titled ā€œRomney: A Reckoning.ā€

Utah is the first state in the nation to begin restricting how minors can use social media apps. Gov. Spencer Cox signed a pair of bills on Thursday that will regulate when and how minors in Utah can use of social media and aims to stop those companies from designing addicting features.

Those new laws will likely lead to a protracted legal fight with the tech industry over privacy and First Amendment issues.

SB152 from Sen. Mike McKell, R-Spanish Fork, will slap several regulations on social media companies on March 1, 2024. Those rules include:

Utah has become the first US state to require social media firms get parental consent for children to use their apps and verify users are at least 18.

The governor said he signed the two sweeping measures to protect young people in the state.

The bills will give parents full access to their children's online accounts, including posts and private messages.

The move comes amidst heightened concern over the impact of social media on children's mental health.

On Saturday, Governor Spencer Cox of Utah (R) signed a bill banning gender-affirming care for minors in the state. Utah joins Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona and Tennessee in outlawing gender-affirming health care for trans youth.

The new law bans gender transition surgery and prohibits the use of hormone therapy, except in limited cases.
