A French politician has called on the US to give the Statue of Liberty back after suggesting that some Americans ā€œhave chosen to switch to the side of the tyrants.ā€

Raphael Glucksmann, a member of the European Parliament who represents the small left-wing party Place Publique, made the comments at a rally on Sunday.

ā€œGive us back the Statue of Liberty,ā€ said Glucksmann. ā€œIt was our gift to you. But apparently you despise her.ā€

A French politician facetiously asked the U.S. to return the Statue of Liberty, suggesting the country no longer lives up to the values the green-hued gift represents.

RaphaĆ«l Glucksmann, a member of the European Parliament with the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, said at a party convention on Sunday that he had a message "to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants … who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom."

Rep. Maxwell Frost, D-Fla., was mocked on social media Wednesday for telling Republicans to pass a bill to remove the Statue of Liberty along with their "bigoted" immigration law.

A House Oversight and Accountability Committee hearing on immigration discussed H.R.2, the House GOP’s Secure the Border Act, the comprehensive border security and immigration bill passed back in May. The bill would restrict the asylum process for people crossing the border and require resumed construction on the border wall.

A top US immigration official has revised a quote inscribed on the Statue of Liberty in defence of a new policy that denies food aid to legal migrants.

The head of Citizenship and Immigration Services tweaked the passage: "Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free".

The official added the words "who can stand on their own two feet and who will not become a public charge".

He later said the poem had referred to "people coming from Europe".

Trump’s Acting Director of Citizenship and Immigration Services, Ken Cuccinelli, attempts to rewrite the meaning of the Emma Lazarus poem on the Statue of Liberty, ā€œGive me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe freeā€ into something less welcoming. Lawrence O’Donnell explains.

Activists in two separate protests against the Trump administration's immigration policies were arrested at the Statue of Liberty on Wednesday — one group unfurling a banner calling for the abolition of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, while in another act of defiance, a woman climbed the statue's base to protest immigrant family separations.
