Some of his coworkers come from much farther, including one who spends workweeks living in a camper and returns home only at weekends. This corner of eastern Arkansas is dotted with RV parks that cater to such workers.

Donald Trump announced Monday that the US will impose a 25 percent tariff on all imports of steel and aluminum.

The president has a habit of declaring radical changes to trade policy, only to swiftly walk them back. Last week, Trump postponed his long-promised 25 percent tariffs on all imports from Mexico and Canada, after reaching agreements with both countries over border security.

But there’s a reason to think that Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs will stick: He implemented a nearly identical policy during his first term.

Canada and Mexico are two of the U.S.’s biggest steel trading partners, and Canada is the biggest supplier of aluminum metal into the country.

UPI reports Trump told reporters Sunday aboard Air Force One of his plan by declaring, “Any steel coming into the United States is going to have a 25 percent tariff. Aluminum, too.”

President Trump said he will announce 25 percent tariffs on steel and aluminum on Monday, adding that he would also kick off reciprocal tariffs in the days after.

Trump said that the steel and aluminum tariffs would impact “everybody” when asked what countries would be effected.

“Any steel coming into the United States is going to have a 25 percent tariff — aluminum too,” Trump told reporters. “Twenty-five percent … for both.”

He added that details of the reciprocal tariffs will be announced on Tuesday or Wednesday in a news conference.

As he campaigned for reelection in the "Steel City" of Pittsburgh, Biden aides said the U.S. president was proposing raising to 25% the tariffs imposed by his predecessor Donald Trump on certain Chinese steel and aluminum products.

President Joe Biden called for tripling the tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum, a policy proposal timed for his meeting with union workers in Pennsylvania on Wednesday.

While speaking before the United Steelworkers union, Biden will call upon U.S. Trade Representative Katherine Tai to triple the tariffs from their average level of 7.5%.

U.S. Steel shareholders approved the $14.1 billion controversial takeover by Japanese-owned Nippon Steel. 

More than 98% of the shares voted at Friday’s meeting to approve the merger, making up about 71% of the company’s outstanding stock, U.S. Steel said. 

The United Steelworkers endorsed President Joe Biden just days after he announced his opposition to the sale of U.S. Steel to a foreign competitor.

“President Biden proved time and again during his first term that he stands with working families,” USW President David McCall said. “His vision and leadership allowed our nation to strengthen workers’ access to collective bargaining, grow the middle class, and embark on a path to widespread prosperity.”

Biden and McCall spoke last week, during which the president reiterated he “has the steelworkers back.”
