Negotiations between Starbucks and its union have broken down with workers calling the company’s proposals “almost laughable” and highlighting the multi-million pay package of the coffee chain’s recently appointed CEO.

Since late 2021, over 530 Starbucks stores have won union elections, representing more than 12,000 workers at the company. But talks aimed at negotiating a first union contract have stalled and the company has called the union’s proposals “not sustainable”.

Apple workers at Towson store in Maryland have voted in favor of authorizing a strike, according to a statement from International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Coalition of Organized Retail Employees (IAM CORE) .

The Union, which represents Apple workers in Maryland, said on Saturday that the staff will go for strike over concerns related to work-life balance, unpredictable schedules and wages failing to align with the area's cost of living.

Gig drivers from across the country are expected to walk off the job Wednesday to demand better pay.

According to Justice for App Workers, which represents thousands of gig workers in the U.S., DoorDash, Uber and Lyft drivers from across the country will participate in an organized strike on Valentine’s Day.

“We’re sick of working 80 hours/week just to make ends meet, being constantly scared for our safety and worrying about being deactivated with the click of a button,” the group said last week.

Thousands of drivers for ride-sharing platforms Uber, Lyft and food delivery app DoorDash are expected to go on strike across the United States on Valentine's Day for fair pay, drivers' groups said on Monday.

The demonstrations are set to take place about a week after Lyft said it would guarantee weekly earnings for drivers, a first in the U.S. ride-hailing industry as it looks to lure more drivers to its platform.

"We are constantly working to improve the driver experience," Lyft, which is set to report quarterly results on Tuesday, told Reuters on Monday.

A group of Brown University students have entered the eighth day of a hunger strike to pressure their school to divest from businesses they say benefit from Israel's occupation of Palestinian territories.

The 19 students began their protests on 2 February.

They said they will continue until Brown officials consider divesting.

It is likely the longest hunger strike in the US since the beginning of the ongoing Israel-Gaza war.

Palestinians and supporters worldwide took part in a global "strike for Gaza" on Monday to demand an end to the Israeli bombardment of the besieged enclave.

The Palestinian National and Islamic Forces, a coalition of Palestinian factions, had called for workers in the occupied West Bank and across the world to observe a general strike in solidarity with Gaza that would impact "all aspects of life".

The coalition said in a statement that they expected "the entire globe" to respond to the call.

Washington Post journalists are planning to walk off their jobs in a 24-hour strike on Thursday, according to the union.

The Washington Post Guild announced in a letter to the newspaper’s readers on Tuesday that its members will be participating in the 24-hour strike over management refusing “to bargain in good faith” and walking out of negotiations. The union said management “shut down” negotiations discussing issues like pay equity, pay raises, remote work policies and mental health resources.

Tesla sued Sweden’s postal agency after mail workers in the country refused to deliver license plates in solidarity with striking service autoworkers.

As CNBC reports, the company calls postal workers’ refusal to deliver license plates a “discriminatory attack” and says that the Swedish government has a “constitutional obligation” to get plates to vehicle owners.

Portland Public Schools in Oregon announced on Sunday it had reached a tentative agreement with its teachers union, and students will return to classes on Monday with a two-hour delay after more than three weeks out of school.

Teachers who have been on strike since Nov. 1 over concerns about pay, class sizes and planning time will still need to vote on the agreement. The deal must also be approved by the school board, although the union is allowing classes to resume while the votes move forward.
