A pair of federal judges have hit the brakes on President Biden’s latest student loan repayment plan, signaling that the program is at risk of being overturned and leaving millions of borrowers in a state of panic.

President Joe Biden‘s plans to cancel student loan debt have been partially blocked thanks to a pair of court rulings, but the matter remains alive for both sides in the 2024 election.

Responding to lawsuits filed by a pair of Republican attorneys general, federal judges in Missouri and Kansas ruled this week that Biden’s Saving on a Valuable Education program cannot be fully implemented, temporarily pausing major elements until the case is decided.

President Biden’s latest iteration of his student-loan “forgiveness” plan has been temporarily blocked, as two federal judges sided with multiple Republican states in ruling that only Congress holds the authority to erase student debt.

Public discussions regarding rising college costs typically focus on the listed cost of attendance (COA), or “sticker price.” Sticker prices for four-year colleges and universities are in the tens of thousands of dollars per year and have risen substantially over the past several decades. High and rising college sticker prices are the subject of considerable attention.

According to the White House, Biden’s student-loan forgiveness package should result in 4 million Americans seeing their college debt wiped clean; more than 10 million enjoying a reduction of $5,000 in debt relief; and the elimination of accrued interest for 23 million additional borrowers.

President Joe Biden announced a new bid on Monday to provide federal student loan debt relief to millions of Americans, part of a patchwork of debt relief plans the administration has been stitching together since the Supreme Court struck down Biden’s biggest swing last summer. The new plan offered up on Monday won’t affect nearly as many people as the original plan — but it’s definitely the best workaround that the White House has come up with yet.
