In 2018 a former deputy governor of Sweden’s central bank predicted that by 2025 the country would probably be cashless.

Seven years on, that prediction has turned out to be pretty much true. Just one in 10 purchases are made with cash, and card is the most common form of payment, followed by the Swedish mobile payment system Swish, launched by six banks in 2012 and now ubiquitous. Other mobile phone payment services are also growing quickly.

With its powerful camera, the French Navy surveillance plane scouring the Baltic Sea zoomed in on a cargo ship plowing the waters below — closer, closer and closer still until the camera operator could make out details on the vessel’s front deck and smoke pouring from its chimney.

As the protests in Malmo over Israel’s inclusion in this year’s Eurovision Song Contest, like the anguished defences of taking part by British and Irish contestants show, the kitschy spectacle is an inherently geopolitical format. In the interests of fairness then, should Palestine, like its neighbour Israel, enter Eurovision?

Sweden has taken the bold move of cutting interest rates, surprising some analysts and marking a new phase in global monetary policy that could accelerate economic expansion or return countries including the U.S. to a more cautious approach. The Riksbank moved Thursday morning to slash its base interest rate from 4% to 3.75%, following other small European countries including Switzerland and Hungary in declaring the worst was over in the battle with inflation. Sweden’s preferred measure of inflation has fallen to 2.2%, close to the Riksbank’s target of 2%. On...

Having shaken four continents, Taylor Swift's Eras Tour finally brings the biggest pop culture icon of the century to Europe from Thursday, starting with a four-night run in Paris. Swift has broken almost every record in music, and her sixth tour is no exception. The Eras Tour, which began in March 2023, is already the first to sell more than $1 billion in tickets, and is expected to more than double that by the time it concludes in Vancouver this December. Swifties in Paris are especially excited to hear songs...

Neighbors of a gay couple in Maryland were shocked to find out they were arrested for possession of child pornography after getting flagged by IKEA. 41-year-old Robert Sherer and 54-year-old Robert Books were arrested Wednesday after police were tipped off about Sherer allegedly downloading child pornography on his work computer. He worked as a senior resolutions generalist at IKEA in White Marsh. The company, which is based in Sweden, notified Swedish police about the alarming discovery after confirming the accusation.

When Renewcell AB opened its inaugural commercial factory in 2022, it was hailed as a beacon of hope for a more sustainable future in fashion. Launched in a repurposed paper mill in Sweden, the world’s first industrial-scale textile-to-textile recycling plant represented a project of unparalleled ambition that would pave the way for an entire new industry. Just over a year later, on Feb. 26, Renewcell filed for bankruptcy. The decision came four months after the public company issued a profit warning over slow sales of Circulose, the biodegradable pulp it...

Sadibou Sy spent six weeks bulking up late last year during a prolonged trip away from his current residence in Las Vegas to his native Stockholm. When he returned to his home gym, the renowned Xtreme Couture on West Sunset Road, toward the start of the new year, Sy’s training partners hardly recognized him. Several teammates asked the previously lanky 6-foot-3 fighter about his weight. Why was someone who had recently been a champion in the Professional Fighter League’s welterweight division suddenly looking like a heavyweight? “I heard Francis (Ngannou)...

Polish FM: The EU has spent double what the U.S. has spent on helping Ukraine. Russia is now a more dangerous adversary than it was two years ago. This calls for change in how the war is fought. The first area where Ukraine and its supporters must change is war strategy. Until now, the West has adopted a strategic posture focused on defending Ukraine. This ensured the survival of Ukraine until now, but the revived and more dangerous threat of Russia means “defending Ukraine” is now a strategy for defeat....
