Democrats are facing increasing pressure from parents to reintroduce in-person teaching while education unions resist party leaders' efforts to get pupils back in the classroom.

California and Chicago have emerged as flashpoints in the debate about schools reopening as unions in both locations refuse to resume in-person teaching amid concerns about COVID-19.

Unions in Chicago say they'll continue remote teaching until the coronavirus safety measures they are seeking are introduced. In California, the conflict is focused on vaccinations for teachers.

Is your child's school open now?

Probably not -- because teachers unions say that reopening would "put their health and safety at risk."

They keep schools closed by lobbying and protesting. "If I die from catching COVID-19 from being forced back into Pinellas County Schools, you can drop my dead body right here!" shouts one demonstrator in my new video.

But schools rarely spread COVID-19. Studies on tens of thousands of people found "no consistent relationship between in-person K-12 schooling and the spread of the coronavirus."

The largest teachers’ union’s latest recommendation would functionally prohibit many charter schools, hurting students of color especially.

In its latest policy platform, the National Education Association (NEA), the largest union that represents my profession, has once again made clear that it cares more about institutions than about families and students. The platform’s opening paragraphs set out the NEA’s ostensible purpose: to do what’s best for students and shrink racial inequities. In reality, its policies would accomplish the opposite.

It’s not enough that public school teachers and the college professors who train them are increasingly prone to teaching leftist absurdities like “2+2=5” or presenting the mendacious 1619 Project as legitimate American history. Teachers unions are now trying to blackmail the entire country into meeting a set of leftist political demands for reopening the schools this fall, using COVID-19 as their excuse.

As the Wuhan virus pandemic persists and wild rhetoric along with it, teachers unions are threatening to strike if schools reopen, but they’re also pushing to limit online teaching. These unions have long incentivized all the wrong things in education, but demanding teachers be paid to do virtually nothing is a new low. As a New York Times headline announced this week, teachers are “Wary of Returning to Class, and Online Instruction Too.”

A prominent teachers union is training it members to inject identity politics into nearly all aspects of teaching, and included in its journals biased and debunked information.

The American Federation of Teachers (AFT), the nation’s second-largest teachers union, took to the pages of its quarterly journal, “American Educator,” to instruct members to incorporate liberal ideology in classroom teachings. The College Fix reported that the main theme of the issue is confronting bias in schools, but “the essay that kicks off the issue almost treats the theme as an afterthought.”

“Striking Chicago teachers are preparing for an extended walkout and trying to increase public pressure on Mayor Lori Lightfoot, with a downtown march set for Wednesday.” (AP News)

On Monday, Elizabeth Warren released a plan for public school education. The plan would increase federal education funding, attempt to remedy racial disparities and segregated schools, end federal funding for charter schools, and ban for-profit charter schools. (Medium)

The left supports both the teachers’ strike and Warren’s education plan.
