Border patrol agents arrested record numbers of migrants illegally trying to cross into the US on Monday and Tuesday as the end of Title 42 looms, according to a report.

Over 10,300 migrants were apprehended Tuesday after they illegally attempted to enter the country, Fox News’ Bill Melugin reported, citing Customs and Border Protection sources. Over 10,000 more were reportedly nabbed Monday.

Both mark the highest single-day totals in the agency’s recorded history, according to the report.

A record number of migrants were recently apprehended at the US-Mexico border in a single day, fuelling fears over what will happen in a few hours when a controversial immigration policy expires.

The rule, known as Title 42, was first implemented in 2020 and made it easier for the US to expel migrants back to Mexico using the coronavirus pandemic as justification.

But its looming expiration at 23:59 ET on Thursday (03:59 GMT on Friday) has triggered a rush to reach the border, and cities on both sides are readying for a rise in attempted crossings once it lapses.

Border Patrol agents will release aliens from custody the moment Title 42 ends, two senior agency officials tell the Washington Free Beacon.

The move is meant to provide relief for authorities on the southern border as holding facilities reach maximum capacity following an expected migrant surge. The policy removes tracking mechanisms and check-in requirements usually given to migrants released while awaiting asylum hearings. It is unclear whether the revised policy has any mechanisms in place to ensure aliens will comply with future asylum summons.

Carmen couldn’t sleep through the night for two years.

She hoped she would get rest after spending long days at the Berks County immigration detention center in Lessport, Pennsylvania. But rest never came for the 39-year-old mom from Honduras. Every 15 minutes, the guards would point their flashlights directly in their faces, confirming that the families were still there even though they had nowhere else to go.

The light would wake up everyone, including her toddler son. The cycle was agonizing, and it went on for nearly two years.

The Biden administration on Wednesday morning unveiled a lengthy plan on how it plans to deter and stop immigrants from crossing the southern border from Mexico once Title 42 expires.

Title 42 is the pandemic-era public health order that was put in place in March 2020 by the Trump administration that has restricted migrants from claiming asylum at the border in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus between countries. It expires at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday night.

Mexico was never a “migration nation” like the U.S. But American policy written during the pandemic has caused a bottleneck at the border – and forced Mexicans to rethink their obligations to migrants.

Eleven-year-old Melissa sits in a yellow schoolhouse on the outskirts of Tijuana, joining the chorus of voices answering a teacher who instructs the class on long division.

An incoming storm with severe flooding potential is expected to hit southern and western Texas as Title 42 expires Thursday.

Border crossings are expected to see a steep uptick with the end of the policy, which allowed the U.S. to turn away migrants at the border under the belief that they would exacerbate the COVID-19 pandemic. The order was installed under President Donald Trump in 2020, and Newsweek reported that since the measure was implemented, an estimated 2.7 million migrants have been turned away.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott deployed a special tactical National Guard force to the southern border on Monday to slow down the expected surge of illegal immigrants crossing into the United States after the Biden Administration ends COVID-19 restrictions this week.

Abbott has openly criticized President Joe Biden for his open-border policies and his decision to end Title 42, a Trump-era public health order that allowed for the immediate expulsion of illegal immigrants, which some have predicted would bring a fresh cascade of illegal migration upward of 13,000 crossings a day.
