Uber riders in Chicago are seeing a new option in the app: a taxi. The ride-hailing company, which has long been blamed for a decline in taxi business, added the feature Thursday. But some Chicago cab drivers remain skeptical of the addition and bitter toward the company. Uber collaborated with taxi technology companies Arro and Curb Mobility, allowing about 2,600 Arro- and Curb-enabled Chicago taxi drivers to accept Uber referrals. The city has about 2,800 active cabs. “We firmly believe that Uber and taxis are better together. As we continue...

A Japan Airlines plane collided with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft while landing in Tokyo on Tuesday, causing the passenger jet to burst into flames and killing Coast Guard members on the other plane bound for earthquake relief efforts.

The airline said that all 367 passengers and 12 crew members on its plane were safely evacuated at Haneda Airport, according to NHK, the public broadcaster. Five crew members on the Coast Guard plane were killed, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said during a news conference.

flight carrying hundreds of passengers on Tuesday caught fire on a runway at Tokyo’s Haneda airport after colliding with a Japan Coast Guard aircraft.

Citing Tokyo police, Japanese national broadcaster NHK said five of the six crew members on the Coast Guard aircraft had been confirmed dead. The pilot, who evacuated, is reportedly severely injured.

The Coast Guard aircraft was heading to Niigata to provide relief for the recent earthquake, according to initial reports.

Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida said on Thursday the government will spend over 17 trillion yen ($113 billion) in a package of measures to cushion the economic blow from rising inflation, which will include tax cuts.

To fund part of the spending, the government will compile a supplementary budget for the current fiscal year of 13.1 trillion yen, Kishida told reporters.

The timeline for approval and release of the various Covid-19 vaccines was world-historically fast- but could it have been faster? Pharmaceutical companies, Doctors, and medical ethicists everywhere are debating whether human challenge trials- deliberately infecting willing subjects with pathogens- could have sped up the process, or whether they could do so to stop future pandemics.

• Upbeat Fedspeak, long weekend in Japan allowed Yen bears to take a breather ahead of Fed Chair Powell’s speech. USD/JPY takes offers to refresh the intraday low near 131.60 as it prints a three-day downtrend even as the Tokyo inflation data fails to bolster hawkish expectations from the Bank of Japan (BOJ). The reason could be linked to the long weekend in Japan, as well as the wait for Fed Chair Jerome Powell’s speech and the US inflation data. As per the latest Tokyo inflation data, the headline Consumer...

• Downbeat US data weigh on hawkish Fed wagers, tease US recession. • Light calendar, off in Japan restrict market moves ahead of inflation data from China, Japan and US. Market sentiment improves in Asia as China drops the last flag of the zero-Covid policy and the softer US wage growth data challenged hawkish Fed wagers. Even so, an absence of traders from Tokyo and a light calendar, as well as a cautious mood ahead of this week’s key inflation data, restrict the volatility during early Monday. While portraying the...

There’s nothing fishy about this tale of a tuna that sold for $270,000. That was indeed the price for a 467-lb. bluefin tuna offered at a New Year’s auction in Tokyo. The sizable sum (36 million in Japanese Yen) was more than twice the top figure paid last year for a tuna, according to the Japan Times, and is the sixth highest price paid for such a fish since data began being made available more than 20 years ago. There were joint buyers of the top-drawer tuna — a wholesale...
