American sports legend Mary Lou Retton, who captured the attention of the nation when she won the all-around women's gymnastics competition at the 1984 Summer Olympics, has been hospitalized, according to a statement from her daughter.

Retton is "fighting for her life" as she battles pneumonia in an intensive care unit, McKenna Lane Kelley said this week.

Kelley's Instagram post also noted that Retton "is not able to breathe on her own."

Larry Nassar, the disgraced former sports doctor who was convicted of sexually abusing female gymnasts, was stabbed during an altercation with another inmate at a Florida federal prison, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The attack occurred Sunday at United States Penitentiary Coleman in Sumterville, and Nassar was in stable condition, sources told Fox News. The Associated Press first reported about the incident.

One person told the Associated Press that Nassar had been stabbed in the back and the chest.

Larry Nassar, the disgraced doctor of USA Gymnastics who was convicted of sexually abusing young female gymnasts, has been stabbed multiple times by another inmate in prison and was in stable condition on Monday, U.S. media reported.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that an inmate at the U.S. Penitentiary Coleman in Florida was assaulted on Sunday afternoon, but declined to identify the prisoner over privacy and security concerns.

Former USA Gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar was assaulted during an incident at the federal prison where he is housed in Florida, according to two sources familiar with the incident.

Joe Rojas, president of the local correction officers’ union, tells CNN that Nassar was stabbed a total of 10 times, twice in the neck, twice in the back, and six times in the chest. Rojas credits corrections officers on the scene with saving Nassar’s life. Rojas says Nassar is in stable condition.

President Biden awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to 16 Americans on Thursday, including decorated Olympic gymnast Simone Biles, soccer star Megan Rapinoe and former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. The late Sen. John McCain and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs received the award posthumously.

Actor Denzel Washington, who was also set to be honored, couldn't attend Thursday's ceremony, but Mr. Biden said he will give him the award at a later date.

More than 90 women and girls, including the star gymnasts who raised concerns about Larry Nassar in 2015 that were disregarded by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, filed administrative tort claims against the agency on Wednesday collectively seeking $1 billion.

The claimants include Simone Biles, McKayla Maroney, Maggie Nichols and Aly Raisman, the elite gymnasts who were first identified in the summer of 2015 as having been sexually abused by the then-doctor to the national women’s gymnastics team under the guise of medical treatment.

Hundreds of female gymnasts who were sexually abused by Lawrence G. Nassar, the former team doctor of the national gymnastics team, have agreed to a $380 million settlement with U.S.A. Gymnastics and the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee, ending the latest dark chapter in one of the biggest molestation cases in sports history.
