In a powerful show of solidarity with the Black Lives Matter movement, COVID-19 has vowed not to infect anyone protesting inequality.

The official COVID-19 account tweeted out, "In solidarity with those protesting inequality, I hereby vow not to infect anyone at BLM rallies."

"We need to take a moment to pause and hear what these people are saying," the virus said in a statement. "All infectious activities will be put on hiatus until Republicans start protesting lockdowns or second amendment issues -- then we will resume."

The world’s richest 500 people increased their collective wealth by 25% in 2019 ― a stark reminder of worsening income inequality, particularly in the U.S.

The 500 wealthiest people held a net worth of $5.9 trillion dollars ― collectively up $1.2 trillion over this year alone, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Topping the list of richest people were familiar names: Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, followed by Microsoft founder Bill Gates, French luxury group head Bernard Arnault, Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett and Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

Many believe that poor people deserve to be poor because they're lazy. As Speaker John Boehner has said, the poor have a notion that "I really don't have to work. I don't really want to do this. I think I'd rather just sit around."

In reality, a large and growing share of the nation's poor work full time -- sometimes sixty or more hours a week -- yet still don't earn enough to lift themselves and their families out of poverty.

Last week, Emma Watson, the UN Women Goodwill Ambassador better known as Hermione from Harry Potter, delivered a speech to the delegates gathered in New York championing feminism and pledging to end gender inequality. Big task! Her campaign will tackle, among other things, the fact that women are paid so much less than men, even in countries like the United States and the U.K., where we are allegedly no longer discriminated against. (As if to illustrate the rampant sexism that still exists, hackers threatened to release nude photos of her after her speech.)

The two U.S. counties with the worst income inequality couldn't be more different. No. 1 is Manhattan. The second is a rural Native American reservation in North Dakota.
