COLUMBIA — Wells Fargo plans to close its Columbia corporate office by June 2024. The closure is part of larger office consolidation efforts by the banking giant, according to a notice filed with the state Department of Employment and Workforce. Wells Fargo & Co. announced an agreement Tuesday that calls for hiring of at least 1,000 employees at an average annual wage of $52,000 to expand its customer service hub in Roanoke County. This expansion will make Wells Fargo the largest employer in Roanoke County, and the project represents both the largest commercial office investment and single project employment announcement in Roanoke County’s history, according to a news release from Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s office. The investment will also “enhance the working experience” for more than 1,650 current employees, the news release said.

Virginia authorities released the mugshot of the bank robbery suspect accused of taking four adults and one child hostage inside a Wells Fargo outside Washington, D.C., Tuesday.
