Talk about going to egg-stremes.

Border agents are seeing a sharp rise in the number of egg smuggling attempts by travelers coming from Mexico and Canada as prices in the US have surged to as high as $10 a carton.

US Customs and Border Protection reported a 36% increase in egg interceptions this fiscal year — with certain border regions in Texas experiencing a 54% spike, while cases in San Diego have more than doubled, according to the Wall Street Journal...

Egg prices have fallen sharply so far in March on some progress in ending a shortage, giving consumers some much-needed relief with the supermarket staple.

The cost of white large shell eggs declined to $6.85 per dozen, on average, last week, according to data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. That represents a decline of $1.20 per dozen, and a 15% pull back the USDA’s prior update on Feb. 28.

After months of sticker shock from the nationwide egg crisis, relief might finally be on the way.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported Friday that the national average wholesale price of eggs has been steadily declining since late February. In other words, the cost that distributors are charging retailers is going down.

According to the latest USDA report, the average wholesale cost of large white eggs was $4.15 per dozen — about half of what it was just a few weeks ago...

Rising energy prices are putting a damper on the slowing inflation narrative as wholesale costs rose 0.6% in February, double the expectation, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported on Thursday.

On an annual basis, the producer price index increased by 1.6%, well above the 1.2% forecast and the largest year-over-year gain since September.

“Nearly 70 percent of the broad-based rise in February can be attributed to the index for final demand energy, which jumped 4.4 percent,” the release said.

Wholesale inflation rose at double its expected rate in February, according to a government report released Thursday, the second report this week that could indicate a lack of progress on tempering inflation.

The Producer Price Index (PPI), which tracks the cost of materials that producers and manufacturers buy from their suppliers, rose by 0.6 percent last month compared with January, a report from the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. That surge is double the expected 0.3 percent that Dow Jones forecasted.

Wholesale prices accelerated at a faster-than-expected pace in February, another reminder that inflation remains a troublesome issue for the U.S. economy.

The producer price index, which measures pipeline costs for raw, intermediate and finished goods, jumped 0.6% on the month, the Labor Department’s Bureau of Labor Statistics reported Thursday. That was higher than the 0.3% forecast from Dow Jones and comes after a 0.3% increase in January.

Wholesale prices rose more than expected in November as food prices surged, dampening hopes that inflation could be headed lower, the Labor Department reported Friday.

The producer price index, a measure of what companies get for their products in the pipeline, increased 0.3% for the month and 7.4% from a year ago, which was the slowest 12-month pace since May 2021. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones had been looking for a 0.2% gain.
