Mexico’s president said Wednesday that he expects the U.S. government or U.S. banks to provide interest-free loans to build four wind-power farms in the narrow waist of southern Mexico, an area known as the Isthmus of Tehuantepec.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he expects U.S. climate envoy John Kerry to travel to the area next month to launch the projects.

Clean energy is rapidly rising on the Texas power grid, but regulators in the Lone Star State are now considering a plan that could give fossil fuels a boost.

The Biden administration is advancing a massive wind energy project planned for southern Idaho that pits President Joe Biden's environmental priorities directly against one another.

The Biden administration announced new initiatives Thursday to stand up thousands of megawatts of floating offshore wind capacity over the next decade to supplement fixed wind capacity constructed in more shallow waters.

Under a hot July sun, President Joe Biden gazed out over the former home of one of America's largest coal-burning power plants to declare a new "frontier" in the fight against climate change.

President Biden labeled climate change as an “emergency” on Wednesday but stopped short of declaring a national emergency following pressure from climate advocates. 

In a speech at a former coal plant in Somerset, Mass., Biden also pledged to take action to combat the threat of climate change after congressional action stalled. 

President Biden traveled to Massachusetts on Air Force One Wednesday to speak about the “climate crisis” linked to use of fossil fuels — pumping greenhouse gases into the atmosphere in the process.

With the presidential aircraft scheduled to land in Warwick, Rhode Island, Biden will then join a largely gasoline-powered motorcade to travel 25 miles to Brayton Point Power Station — a onetime coal-burning plant that is being refurbished to support offshore windmill-generated energy — in Somerset, Mass.

As President Biden's climate ambitions continue to languish in the Senate, he traveled to the site of a former coal power plant in Massachusetts to announce new funding designed to help communities bear extreme heat, as well as tout the country's developing offshore wind industry.

"As president, I have the responsibility to act with urgency and resolve when our nation faces clear and present danger. And that's what climate change is about," Biden said. "It is literally — not figuratively — a clear and present danger."

Clean energy proponents are touting the use of solar and wind power in oil-rich Texas, but a summer heat wave is showing the limits of renewables in sustaining a major power grid.

Temperatures have climbed into the 100’s this month and Texas energy companies are sending urgent messages to customers to warn of rolling blackouts. They also are asking customers to conserve by raising thermostats, cutting back on using dishwashers and washing machines and limiting electric vehicle charging.

The claim: A wind turbine must spin continuously for seven years to replace energy required to manufacture it 

Wind power is the largest source of renewable energy in the U.S., and it now accounts for more than 9% of electricity generated in the country, according to the Energy Information Administration.

As this supply of energy has expanded, critics have questioned its use. Recently, social media posts have alleged that wind power is inefficient and unnecessarily expensive.
