The automatic driving features of a Tesla car have been put to the test with a fake "Wile E. Coyote wall" by an engineering YouTuber, and it didn't go as Tesla CEO Elon Musk might have hoped.

Mark Rober, who has over 65 million subscribers on YouTube, tested the vehicle's autonomous cameras by driving at a screen with an exact replica of the road behind it, in the style of a Looney Tunes sketch. The car was unable to detect the wall, crashing directly through it.

Newsweek contacted Tesla for comment via email.

Mark Rober is perhaps the most successful science and engineering YouTube creator.

He has 65 million subscribers — more than Taylor Swift — and many of his videos have over 120 million views, surpassing the most recent Super Bowl.

Rober’s most recent release compares a Tesla dealing with various road issues with a test car with a Luminar LIDAR. He tests how both cars react to a dummy child in the road obscured by fog, water jets, bright lights and even a giant printed poster showing an empty road, as sometimes seen in the Road Runner cartoons.

Luminar Technologies Inc. shares surged on Monday after former NASA scientist Mark Rober test-drove a car equipped with the company’s lidar technology in a YouTube video and said it outperformed Tesla Inc.’s Autopilot feature.

In the video, which has drawn more than 11 million viewers since it was published to YouTube on March 15, Rober runs six tests assessing the lidar technology against Tesla’s system, which he said navigates using only “simple cameras” and image processing.

Can you trick a Tesla’s camera-based Autopilot system, which has been linked to hundreds of crashes, using simulated rain, fog? Will it barrel through a wall covered in an image of the road beyond, like Looney Tunes’ Wile E. Coyote slamming into the Road Runner’s fake tunnels?

Yes you can, according to Engineer and YouTuber Mark Rober’s testing. (Bonus: Rober also uses LiDAR to map Disney’s pitch-black Space Mountain coaster. )

YouTuber Mark Rober is facing backlash over a recent video that depicted a spectacular “crash test” of Tesla’s Autopilot feature — with critics claiming it was a hoax orchestrated to hurt Elon Musk’s automaker.

In a video posted to his YouTube channel over the weekend, Rober’s Tesla Model Y seemingly failed to detect a Wile E. Coyote-style wall painted to look like a road – crashing through and demolishing a mannequin designed to look like a child.

Google has notified the European Union that it won’t integrate work from fact-checking organizations into Search or YouTube, ahead of the bloc’s plans to expand disinformation laws. Google had previously signed a set of voluntary commitments that the EU introduced in 2022 to reduce the impact of online disinformation, which are in the process of being formalized into law under the Digital Services Act (DSA).

YouTube has a pattern of recommending right-leaning and Christian videos, even to users who haven’t previously interacted with that kind of content, according to a recent study of the platform’s suggestions to users.

The four-part research project, conducted by a London-based nonprofit organization that researches extremism called the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, explored video recommendations served to accounts designed to mimic users interested in four topic areas: gaming, male lifestyle gurus, mommy vloggers and Spanish-language news.

Suppose you agree that ours is an increasingly postliterate age. The average person, including the average Christian, is reading less, and Christians of all ages, especially the young, lack the basics of biblical literacy. Is that all there is to say? Is hunger for Scripture simply dying out? By no means. Of all tech pessimists I may be chief, yet few things excite me more than what’s happening online with the Bible. What we see is not declining interest in Scripture but an explosion of it. The question is not,...

Social media influencer Kai Cenat will not be prosecuted on charges of inciting a riot and unlawful assembly connected to a chaotic giveaway he promoted in New York City’s Union Square last year, which resulted in dozens of arrests, the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said. Cenat posted a public apology to social media and has agreed to pay $55,000 in restitution after the riotous crowd of thousands of people damaged landscaping in Union Square, prosecutors said. The district attorney’s office said it will officially dismiss the case after the apology...
