The Moms for Liberty national summit this past weekend renewed discussion on the group’s growing influence on politics and culture.

Major Player: A Reuters (Center bias) analysis highlighted the appearance of numerous 2024 Republican primary candidates and determined the group to be “a major conservative player in national politics.” Five Republican presidential candidates spoke at the summit— Ron DeSantis, Nikki Haley, Donald Trump, Asa Hutchinson and Vivek Ramaswamy— in what Reuters labeled “a testament to the weight their campaigns are placing on race- and gender-based cultural issues related to education heading into next year’s nominating contests.”

2024 Favorites: The Epoch Times (Lean Right bias) asked attendees of the summit to rank the 2024 Republican candidates. DeSantis appeared to be the most popular candidate among attendees, with Trump and Ramaswamy close behind. Hutchinson and Haley ranked the lowest. The article examined attendees' motivations and reasons for joining the group, determining, “Many joined the movement because of the explosion of gender transition, sexual content, and grooming happening at schools.”

Moral Panic: An opinion piece in The Nation (Left bias) criticized reporting on the group, arguing coverage is “playing right into its hands.” The piece compares coverage of Moms for Liberty to coverage of the Tea Party movement, determining journalists are ignoring the group’s “lengthy record of harassing school officials, LGBTQ+ students, and others,” concluding, “with a whole new set of moral panics convulsing the right in precisely the same autocratic fashion, mainstream reporters can’t be bothered to connect the dots.”

Republican and Democrat presidential candidates were all invited to speak at the Moms for Liberty national summit in Philadelphia, organizers say, and five Republicans said yes.

The summit took place June 29 through July 2 at the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, and the candidates who spoke were, in order of appearance, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley, and former President Donald Trump on June 30, and former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy on July 1.

Top rivals for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination on Friday addressed the national conference of Moms for Liberty, appealing to the conservative parents-rights advocacy group with vows to bolster education and keep discussion of gender identity out of the classroom.

"Don't mess with America's moms," former President Donald Trump told the crowd in Philadelphia, calling the group a "grassroots juggernaut."

Even before Moms for Liberty had wrapped up its second annual national conference—bearing the Margaret Atwood-esque sobriquet “Joyful Warriors Summit”—in Philadelphia on Sunday, the event was a messaging triumph. That’s because the Florida-based right-wing school takeover group, launched in 2021 to protest Covid lockdowns, could count on an amnesiac and credulous press to dress up its race-mongering, anti-LGBTQ+, and hard-right organizing profile in the image of standard-issue interest group steeped in the homespun politics of local citizen outrage at the grassroots level.
