One of billionaire Elon Musk's allies has been installed as the head of the Treasury Department bureau that manages the nation's most powerful payment system after the tech mogul pushed out a career civil servant who previously held the role, according to sources.

Oregon taxpayers will become some of the first in the nation to have the option to self-identify their race and ethnicity when they file their tax returns next year.  

The reason is both simple and complex: Especially at the state level, taxes worsen America’s yawning wealth gaps rather than easing them. A growing number of advocates and policymakers are trying to do something about that. 

Here comes Americans’ favorite day – April 15, Tax Day! In the land of “No taxation without representation,” we Americans throw a fit over how much we fork over to the government, which taps into related complaints over government waste, budget deficits and more.

April 15 is one of the worst days of the year.

It is the day that state and federal income taxes are due in most states. While some get tax returns for overpaying taxes the previous year, others must pay the government thousands to avoid prison time. In turn, the government wastes that money on garbage and still can’t pay its bills.

Intuit, the owner of tax filing software TurboTax, has agreed to pay $141 million in a settlement with all 50 states for allegedly steering millions of low-income Americans away from free tax-filing services.

The settlement, announced Wednesday by New York Attorney General Letitia James, said about 4.4 million customers were "unfairly charged." Intuit must also suspend its "free, free, free" ad campaign because it falsely lured customers with the promise of free tax preparation services, the statement added.

Major tax reform is one of the most important tasks of this or any Congress. What we do in the next several months will affect every American, every business and our entire economy for decades to come. Unfortunately, those in charge of the current process seem hell bent to pass something, anything, that can be called tax reform before an arbitrary Christmas deadline, with no real input from Democrats (or Independents), outside experts, states and communities affected, or ordinary citizens.
