Otis Worldwide posted a year-over-year decline in quarterly sales due to fewer sales in one business segment that saw weaker demand from China. The Farmington, Conn., maker of elevators and escalators logged net income of $243 million, or 61 cents a share, down from $353 million, or 86 cents a share, in the prior-year period. Stripping out certain one-time items, earnings came in at 92 cents a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected 90 cents a share. The company, formerly a branch of United Technologies, said sales declined to $3.35...

WESTFIELD — Over the last five years, the Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport has seen remarkable growth and one of the driving forces behind that growth was Chris Willenborg, who announced in early April he was leaving his position as airport manager to take a similar position at the Hanscom Air Force Base. “It’s been an honor working closely with the airport management team, a dynamic Airport Commission, a supportive mayor and City Council, and engaged businesses and residents,” Willenborg said at the City Council meeting when announcing he was leaving Westfield....

A Connecticut woman’s body was found dismembered and stored in more than a dozen trash bags when police showed up at her home in March, and now her son has been charged with attempted arson. Authorities showed up at the West Haven home for a welfare check on March 24, after Theodore Lloyd allegedly told police that his 70 year old mother, Tina Lloyd, had been missing for two months, according to the New Haven Register , NBC Connecticut and WFSB , who cited the West Haven Police Department. When...

WATERBURY, Conn. — A man who told police that he was held captive in a Connecticut home by his father and stepmother and given limited food for 20 years before being rescued in February recently celebrated what he called his first-ever birthday party as he turned 32 and wants people to be held responsible for what happened to him. He also said he plans to change his name as he begins to take charge of his life and recovers both physically and mentally. A nonprofit group, Survivors Say, released a...

Initial filings for unemployment benefits in Connecticut dropped last week compared with the week prior, the U.S. Department of Labor said Thursday. New jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, fell to 2,325 in the week ending March 29, down from 2,729 the week before, the Labor Department said. U.S. unemployment claims dropped to 219,000 last week, down 6,000 claims from 225,000 the week prior on a seasonally adjusted basis. Kentucky saw the largest percentage increase in weekly claims, with claims jumping by 114.9%. Nebraska, meanwhile, saw the largest percentage drop...

The home also showed heavy smoke and fire damage from the fire the man set in an attempt to flee. Police released more than 100 photos of the home’s dilapidated interior in response to a public records request. The photos show the filthy conditions in the home, where the man was allegedly held since childhood, including boarded-up windows and locks that appeared to be placed on the outside of doors. Police have released photos showing the inside of a Waterbury, Conn., home where a woman allegedly held her stepson captive...

Nearly 30 years ago, actor Matthew Lillard earned his title of a "scream king" as the character of Stu Macher in 1996's "Scream." A teen that describes himself as "far too sensitive," Stu Macher is one of the two people that dons the Ghostface killer identity in the first movie of the franchise. While Macher is presumed dead at the end of the movie, Lillard has been tapped to return to the franchise for "Scream 7," which will release in 2026 — 30 years after originating the role of Macher....

People know New Haven as the home of thin-crust “apizza” and Yale University, both worthwhile reasons to stop for a pie or take in a Bulldogs game. But for many years, architecture buffs have made a pilgrimage to this Connecticut coastal town for its modernist buildings. “Anyone who lives on the Eastern Seaboard and has driven up I-95 knows the Armstrong Rubber Company building,” said Deborah Berke, dean of the Yale School of Architecture, who knew she wanted to be an architect as soon as she saw that sculptural concrete...

For months it seemed like Chelsea would never get out from under the virus, as the sickness sped from one home to the next. The city’s lousy air quality and attendant respiratory illnesses, dearth of greenspace, and hugely overcrowded housing created perfect conditions for contagion. Fear of immigration repercussions and language barriers made it harder for residents to seek help at first. The fact that 80 percent of Chelsea residents worked in blue-collar jobs deemed essential meant many residents kept going faithfully to work and were exposed every day. The...

Our obnoxious neighbors to the Northeast have committed yet another act of aggression in the great pizza war. Connecticut — the state that has spent more time talking about how great their pizza is than actually making great pizza — boasted yet another bold claim this week. They unveiled vanity license plates that proclaim CT to be “The Pizza State.” READ MORE: N.J. was just named the best pizza state in America. We told you. Colin Caplan, a New Haven pizza historian, pizza guru and person who clearly has never...
