Gang violence in Haiti has continued to further deteriorate the country's security and the crisis is reaching "a point of no return," according to the United Nations' top envoy for the Caribbean nation.

Maria Isabel Salvador, the special representative of the U.N. Secretary-General for Haiti, issued her warning Monday during a Security Council briefing in New York City.

The Trump administration can't immediately revoke the deportation protections and work permits of hundreds of thousands of migrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela who entered the U.S. legally under a Biden-era program, a federal judge ruled Monday.

A message circulating on a Haitian WhatsApp group in Springfield, Ohio, lists the best destinations for those fleeing the town in the wake of Donald Trump’s election win.

All of them are states run by Democrats who could provide sanctuary for Haitians worried about being deported following Mr Trump’s election victory: New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Vermont, Massachusetts and California.

It is believed that thousands have left for those states in the weeks after polling day. More of Ohio’s sizeable Haitian population is preparing to follow.

The Biden administration on Friday announced new temporary protected status for Haitians who arrived in the U.S. on or before June 3, 2024, to shield even those who entered the country illegally from being deported back to Haiti, which remains in the grip of gang violence. 

The first US commercial flight to Haitian capital Port-au-Prince in months made a bleak roundtrip on Thursday morning, returning with the bodies of a young American couple who were killed by a gang last week.

The remains of Davy and Natalie Lloyd were accompanied in an American Airlines jet by US Ambassador to Haiti Dennis Hankins and US security agents, according to a source with knowledge of the operation. After flying from Haiti to Miami, they will be sent onward to their families.

An Oklahoma-based missionary group working in Haiti’s capital was attacked by gangs on Thursday night, leaving two Americans and the group’s director dead, the organization, Missions in Haiti, announced on Facebook.

Missions in Haiti runs a school for 450 children, as well as two churches and a children’s home in the Bon Repos neighborhood in the northern outskirts of Port-au-Prince, which is widely known to be controlled by two local gangs. The independent nonprofit was founded by an Oklahoma couple, David and Alicia Lloyd, in 2000.

Missouri State Rep. Ben Baker says his daughter and son-in-law were both killed in Haiti in a gang attack.

“My heart is broken in a thousand pieces. I’ve never felt this kind of pain,” said Baker in a Facebook post Friday morning on the situation.

Baker (R-Neosho) says his daughter Natalie and his son-in-law Davy were attacked by gangs and killed. They were both full-time missionaries in Haiti.

Republican Missouri State Rep. Ben Baker’s daughter and son-in-law died after violent gangs attacked them while they were serving as missionaries in Haiti, Baker said in a Friday Facebook post.

“Most of you know my daughter and son-in-law Davy and Natalie Lloyd are full time missionaries in Haiti. They were attacked by gangs this evening and were both killed,” Baker wrote early Friday morning.

“My heart is broken in a thousand pieces. I’ve never felt this kind of pain,” he also wrote.
