Pope Francis apologized to Indigenous peoples on Monday and asked for forgiveness for the “evil committed by so many Christians” against them in Canada’s brutal residential school system. 

“I am sorry,” the pope said, while addressing Indigenous elders and residential school survivors at a former residential school site in Maskwacis, Alberta, about 100 kilometres south of Edmonton. 

Pope Francis issued an apology to the indigenous people of Canada on Monday, asking forgiveness for the “evil committed by so many Christians” following international uproar over the treatment of indigenous children at residential Christian schools.

“I am deeply sorry — sorry for the ways in which, regrettably, many Christians supported the colonizing mentality of the powers that oppressed the Indigenous peoples,” Francis said, according to the Washington Post. 

Pope Francis visited the site of a former residential school for indigenous Canadian children on Monday morning and repeatedly apologized for Catholics’ role in government-sponsored “projects of cultural destruction and forced assimilation” that he said had devastated their communities.

While Facebook has heralded improvements to its fight against disinformation in the United States, it has been slow to deal with fake accounts that have affected elections around the world, according to a post published by a former employee.

The employee, who worked on a Facebook team dedicated to rooting out so-called inauthentic activity on the service, said executives ignored or were slow to react to her repeated warnings about the problem.

Shots were fired and protesters blocked traffic and smashed car windows during a demonstration in downtown Denver to protest the death of a George Floyd. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

Gary Cutler, a spokesman for the Colorado State Patrol, said the shooting happened in a park across the street from the Capitol. Most of the protesters already had left the area and were marching downtown.

MINNEAPOLIS—Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz sent in the National Guard as demonstrators clashed with police for a third straight day to protest the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after a white officer pinned him to the ground with a knee on his neck in an incident captured on video.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, who has called for the police officers involved in the incident to be criminally charged, had requested the assistance.

Wednesday night's protest-turned-riot has left behind a trail of burned out buildings, smashed windows, and looted stores in south Minneapolis and beyond.

Much of the damage was centered on the area around the Minneapolis Police 3rd Precinct on Lake Street, where protests over the death of George Floyd led to a minority of demonstrators turn their attentions to nearby businesses.

Shots rang out at a large protest Thursday evening in downtown Louisville, Kentucky, as people gathered to demand justice in the shooting death of Breonna Taylor.

Police confirmed people were shot on Jefferson Street, near City Hall but could not immediately say how many were hit, according to WDRB.

Video showed the crowd quickly dispersing after the shooting.
