Construction on Elm and Hooper streets in downtown Biddeford is affecting local businesses, causing traffic delays and slowing down business. The project, which will last approximately six months, has construction workers digging trenches and upgrading gas and water mains, as well as storm drains, on the short stretch of Elm Street (Route 1). Costing about $4.3 million, the Maine Department of Transportation project is being completed as part of the city’s ongoing sewer separation project.

Gray’s Maine Wildlife Park opened for the 2025 season on Tuesday, April 15, buoyed by high attendance during the school vacation week. According to park Assistant Superintendent Ben Barrett, Maine’s spring break is one of the park’s biggest weeks of the year, with the whole team getting excited about ramping up educational programming and talking with visitors about animal care. The park, which was founded in 1998 on the site of a former game farm, is owned by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, but is entirely funded...

The Maine Lottery offers several games for those aiming to win big. You can pick from national lottery games, like the Powerball and Mega Millions, or a variety of local and regional games, like the Pick 3, Pick 4 and Gimme 5. While your odds of winning a big jackpot in the Powerball or Mega Millions are generally pretty slim (here’s how they compare to being struck by lightning or dealt a royal flush), other games offer better odds to win cash, albeit with lower prize amounts. Here’s a look...

Children incarcerated at Long Creek Youth Development Center, Maine’s only youth prison, have more behavioral health needs than most adults in the state’s prison system. But advocates say those children can’t get the help they need while behind bars. A new proposal would allow police officers to refer children to the Maine Department of Health and Human Services for a “needs assessment,” to determine what medical, educational, social or other services they may require, rather than sending them directly to the corrections and courts system, where their needs are harder...

PORTLAND, Maine — Federal investigators say a cruise ship engine fire that injured a crew member and caused millions in damage while docked in Portland in 2023 was likely caused by debris in the engine’s oil system, and possibly by the crew skipping routine maintenance. We all try our best to be prepared for when disaster strikes. We gather supplies, we make plans. But last year’s winter storms showed us that we need to do more. That is why I am excited to support LD 1, “An Act to Increase Storm Preparedness for Maine’s Communities, Homes and Infrastructure.” Pardon...
