July 23 (Reuters) - The U.S. Transportation Department said on Tuesday it is opening an investigation into Delta Air Lines (DAL.N), opens new tab after the carrier canceled more than 5,000 flights since Friday as it struggles to recover from a global cyber outage, opens new tab that snarled airlines worldwide.

While other carriers have been able to resume normal operations, Delta has continued to cancel hundreds of flights daily of a crew scheduling system.

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian apologized and offered frequent flyer miles to travelers for thousands of flight cancellations as the carrier struggled to recover from Friday’s globe-spanning IT outage, disruptions that sparked criticism from Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

The Atlanta-based airline canceled over 4,600 flights from Friday through Sunday, more than any other airline, according to aviation data firm OAG.

The US aviation industry has asked the Biden administration to pause approval of additional flights to and from China, saying Beijing’s “existing harmful anti-competitive policies” hurt American airlines and workers.

“The competitive disadvantage is harmful to the approximately 315,000 workers employed by US passenger airlines that serve China,” according to a letter published Thursday addressing Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

Delta and American Airlines are under fire for flying illegal migrants from President Joe Biden's Arizona processing centers into domestic U.S. hubs on late-night flights.

According to reports, Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport has become a significant hub for illegal aliens to travel around the United States.

Republican commentator Ashley St Clair was on a flight from Phoenix to New York City when she noticed that her Delta Airlines flight was filled with illegal aliens.

An airplane carrying dozens of passengers from Scotland to John F. Kennedy Airport in New York made an emergency landing Friday after flames erupted from a wing.

A video of the terrifying incident showed massive sparks bursting from the aircraft as worried passengers cry in the background.

Passengers told BBC that they heard a loud bang not long after the plane soared from the Edinburgh airport.

The cliché about a "perfect storm" could hardly be a more apt description of the situation right now for Southwest Airlines — a carrier that has been forced to cancel more than 60% of its flights over the busy Christmas travel season as it struggles to get back on course after a devastating blizzard that socked in much of the United States.

Dallas-based Southwest Airlines is experiencing some of the most dramatic cancellations and delays in history, with some putting blame on the carrier’s operational systems.

For nearly a week, passengers have been stranded at airports across the country, with thousands of flights delayed or canceled during the holidays. The meltdown is likely to cost Southwest Airlines hundreds of millions of dollars.

Delta Air Lines pilots voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike if contract talks between the carrier and the union don’t lead to an agreement, the labor group said Monday.

A strike wouldn’t be immediate and it would require permissions from the federal National Mediation board. The Air Line Pilots Association union said it wants a contract, not a strike.

Covid derailed contract talks throughout the airline industry starting in 2020. Talks have since resumed, and the Delta pilot strike vote underscores the difficulty in getting agreements through.
