President Biden is extending overtime protections to 1 million workers who make less than the median individual salary and is vowing to take more action if reelected.

The executive action announced Monday will extend protections to workers making less than $43,888 a year, the White House said in a statement.

Workers in Amazon’s labor union voted to join the Teamsters by a huge margin of 98.3 percent as labor activity churns following a period of elevated inflation.

The newly chartered ALU-International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT) Local 1 will represent the around 5,500 Amazon warehouse workers at the company’s facility in Staten Island, N.Y., the Teamsters said Tuesday.

WASHINGTON, June 11 (Reuters) - The U.S. has added three more companies to a list that bars imports from firms allegedly involved with Uyghur forced labor in China, according to a U.S. government notice posted online on Tuesday.

The latest targets include shoe manufacturer Dongguan Oasis Shoes Co, electrolytic aluminum maker Xinjiang Shenhuo Coal and Electricity Co and food processor Shandong Meijia Group Co, also known as Rizhao Meijia Group, the notice from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said.

Is there anything that Federal Trade Commission Chair Lina Khan doesn’t think she can do? Apparently not. On Tuesday she and her fellow Democratic commissioners effectively invalidated tens of millions of employment contracts without authority from Congress.

The FTC’s 570-page rule outlaws so-called non-compete agreements across the economy. Employers use these agreements to restrict workers from joining competitors or starting their own firms for a specified duration after leaving. They protect an employer’s intellectual property and investment in worker development.

Federal regulators are tearing up the controversial agreements that forbid millions of workers from taking jobs at companies that compete with their ex-employer. But noncompete clauses might not be gone for good, employment lawyers say — at least, not yet.

More than a year after proposing to block most noncompete agreements, the Federal Trade Commission’s top officials voted 3-2 on Tuesday to do just that.

The administration of U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday unveiled a rule extending mandatory overtime pay to an estimated 4 million salaried workers, going even further than an Obama-era rule that was struck down in court.

The U.S. Department of Labor rule will require employers to pay overtime premiums to workers who earn a salary of less than $1,128 per week, or about $58,600 per year, when they work more than 40 hours in a week.

The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday banned employers from limiting their workers’ abilities to work for rivals, a sweeping change that the agency says could help raise wages and increase competition among businesses.

The move bars contracts known as noncompetes, which prevent workers from leaving for a competitor for a certain amount of time, in most circumstances. The agency has said the proposal would raise wages by forcing companies to compete harder for talent.

The Federal Trade Commission on Tuesday banned employers from using noncompete contracts to prevent most workers from joining rival firms, achieving a policy goal that is popular with labor but faces an imminent court challenge from business groups.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) on Tuesday approved a regulation that would ban noncompete agreements nationwide on the grounds that they unfairly limit workers' mobility and lead to lower pay.

The FTC, which currently has a Democratic majority under President Joe Biden, voted 3-2 to approve the final noncompete rule. The agency first proposed the ban on noncompete agreements in January 2023, arguing they unfairly limit competition. 

It's a universal headache: Your phone rings after work hours, and it's your boss.

You don't know exactly what he or she wants, but it's probably not to wish you a good night or a happy weekend. More likely than not, an after-hours call means more work for you.

Working conditions have changed since the COVID-19 pandemic, which put legions of workers on remote or hybrid schedules. Some of those flexible schedules and location policies remain in place, making it harder for workers to establish a concrete end to their workday.
