President Trump shot down speculation Friday that he might pardon former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin â€” whose 2020 murder of George Floyd unleashed months of protests and rioting nationwide — after conservative media personality Ben Shapiro publicly urged the commander-in-chief to do so.

“No, I haven’t even heard about it, no. I haven’t heard of that,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

Floyd, a 46-year-old black man, died after Chauvin, now 48, knelt on his neck for nine minutes while arresting him for using a fake $20 bill at a store.

Conservative commentator Ben Shapiro has publicly called for the president to pardon former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for federal crimes related to George Floyd’s 2020 death – drawing derision from the Minnesota attorney general who helped put Chauvin in prison but amplification from one of Trump’s most powerful advisers.

Shapiro’s proposal could spring to mind several questions, including: “Could a president do that?” (Answer: Yes); and, “What would it matter, since Chauvin also is in prison on state charges?” (Answer: It’s complicated).

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted in the killing of George Floyd, has returned to the prison where he was stabbed 22 times last month. The 47-year-old ex-cop’s lawyer told the Minneapolis Star Tribune Chauvin’s condition had improved to where he could be released from a Tucson, Ariz., hospital, but they remain “very concerned” the federal penitentiary where he’s incarcerated will be unable to keep him safe. Fellow inmate and former gang member John Turscak allegedly attacked Chauvin on Nov. 24. Turscak was sentenced to 30 years behind...

Killer ex-cop Derek Chauvin is out of a hospital and back in the prison where he was stabbed 22 times by a Black Lives Matter-inspired inmate the day after Thanksgiving. Chauvin, the 47-year-old former Minneapolis cop convicted of murdering George Floyd in 2020, was returned to the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, despite his family’s fears for his safety there, his attorney, Gregory Erickson, told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. “Derek’s family confirmed that his medical condition has improved to the extent that he has been removed from the trauma care...

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has returned to a federal prison in Arizona more than a week after a fellow inmate allegedly stabbed him 22 times with a shank in the library in a Black Friday attack partially inspired by the Black Lives Matter movement. Chauvin is serving more than 20 years for the death of George Floyd and for depriving him of his civil rights in a May 2020 encounter that kicked off nationwide protests. Chauvin's family is "very concerned about the facility’s capacity to protect Derek from...

The former police officer's "medical condition has improved" his lawyer states, after his stabbing in an Arizona prison on Nov. 24 Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin has returned to prison custody following an improved medical condition after his recent stabbing in an Arizona prison, his lawyer confirms. Chauvin’s attorney Gregory M. Erickson says in a statement to PEOPLE, “Derek’s family confirmed that his medical condition has improved to the extent that he has been removed from the trauma care facility at a local Tucson hospital and returned to prison...

Derek Chauvin has returned to prison custody after the former Minneapolis police officer was stabbed 22 times by a fellow inmate, his attorney said. Chauvin, who was convicted in the 2020 murder of George Floyd, was allegedly stabbed with an “improvised knife” on Nov. 24 while in the law library at Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona, by inmate John Turscak, 52, according to a criminal complaint. Chauvin’s attorney Gregory M. Erickson, said in a statement Sunday that he spoke with Chauvin’s family Saturday and “they confirmed that this medical...

The inmate accused of attacking Derek Chauvin, the former police officer convicted in George Floyd’s killing, stabbed him approximately 22 times with an improvised knife in an attack the Arizona inmate had been contemplating for around a month, according to court documents.

According to the federal complaint, at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time on November 24, Chauvin was in the law library at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson when John Turscak, 52, attacked him, causing serious bodily injury.
