Portland police, partnering with county and federal officers, made 46 arrests and seized 44 pounds of fentanyl powder, 2,507 fentanyl pills and 22 pounds of methamphetamine in February, they announced Tuesday. They made the arrests throughout the city, supported by a $15,000 grant that allowed overtime pay for sheriff’s deputies and Portland police. “The challenge is so immense” and can be addressed only through law enforcement collaboration, Portland Police Chief Bob Day said at a news conference. David Reames, special agent in charge of the Drug Enforcement Administration office in...

A federal judge Tuesday sentenced the president of Eugene’s J.H. Baxter & Co. wood treatment plant to 90 days in prison for lying about the company’s illegal handling of hazardous waste at the site. U.S. District Judge Michael J. McShane called Georgia Baxter-Krause, 62, an “absent president” who took little responsibility for what occurred. “The fact that you lied when confronted suggests you knew the practice was not ‘above board,’” McShane said. “There has to be some accountability.” He also ordered Baxter-Krause and the company to pay $1.5 million in...

A federal report finds that oil system debris and missed maintenance likely caused a cruise ship engine fire in Portland in 2023. PORTLAND, Maine — Federal investigators say a cruise ship engine fire that injured a crew member and caused millions in damage while docked in Portland in 2023 was likely caused by debris in the engine’s oil system, and possibly by the crew skipping routine maintenance. The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released its final report on April 2, 2025, detailing the October 18, 2023, explosion aboard the...

Weeks after floods in and around Burns prompted a state of emergency in Harney County, the waters have receded enough that officials on Tuesday lifted all evacuation orders for the region. The Red Cross closed down its indoor shelter at the Harney County Fairgrounds Memorial Building and people started returning to their homes this week, the Harney County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. The Red Cross will continue to provide supplies and meals until Saturday. The flood — which started in March, caused by unusually heavy mountain runoff from...

High pressure over the region will give Portland a few warm, dry, and sunny days through later in the week before rain returns just in time for the weekend. The National Weather Service says high temperatures Tuesday will reach the low-to-mid 60s across the metro area and then climb to the low 70s on Wednesday. The metro core is starting the day in the upper 30s as of about 5 a.m. and a frost advisory is still in effect through 9 a.m. in lowland areas excluding the inner cities. Sheltered...

The Oregon Institute of Technology is seeking financial support to start a new public medical school in Klamath Falls with the hopes of addressing the primary care provider shortage in rural Oregon. Oregon Tech leaders say Oregonians are facing decreasing access to health care providers, particularly in primary care. They say the problem is more pronounced in rural parts of the state. But its proposal would take years and millions of dollars to realize. It’s asking state legislators to allocate $1.5 million just to plan out the process. Nagi Naganathan,...

Oregon’s attorney general on Friday sued the cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase and said the lawsuit was necessary because of the dismantling of federal regulatory agencies. The 171-page lawsuit, filed in Multnomah County, alleges Coinbase is violating the state’s securities laws by facilitating the sale of virtual currencies that don’t come with proper disclosures. “You don’t go in for a medical procedure without knowing the risks,” Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield said in a press release. “It’s the same for everyday folks who want to invest in cryptocurrency. I am committed to...
