The Keystone oil pipeline was shut down Tuesday morning following a rupture in North Dakota, with the resulting spill contained to an agricultural field near Fort Ransom. The cause of the rupture and the amount of crude oil released remain unknown, officials said.

Landowners hoping to block proposed carbon pipeline projects in the U.S. Midwest are getting help from some of America's most prominent anti-pipeline campaigners, including groups that fought the controversial Keystone XL and Dakota Access oil pipelines.

Environmental non-profit Sierra Club and progressive group Bold Alliance are working alongside local organizations to aid property owners across five Midwest states, and are applying lessons learned in their past campaigns, they told Reuters.

The premier of Alberta, Canada, is calling for construction to resume on the Keystone XL pipeline backed by former President Donald Trump in order to replace Russian oil imports in North America. 

TC Energy has formally terminated its Keystone XL pipeline project after consulting with Alberta’s government, marking a victory for Indigenous communities and opponents that have pressured Canada and the US to abandon the project.

TC Energy, the developer of the long-contested Keystone XL oil pipeline, is pulling the plug on the project, the company is poised to announce, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The decision by the Canadian company to cancel the project comes after President Joe Biden canceled a permit for the 2,000-mile oil pipeline that would have run from Alberta in western Canada to the Gulf Coast.

A coalition of 21 states sued President Biden on Wednesday over his executive order that shut down the Keystone XL pipeline. The lawsuit was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas and alleges Biden exceeded his presidential authority by canceling the oil pipeline.

“My husband just called me … he just got fired,” said Laurie Cox, her voice trembling ever so slightly as she put on a brave smile. But it was impossible to ignore her now-crestfallen demeanor.

Cox is the owner of a hotel in Midland, a quaint town with a population of about 100. She had just finished talking about how business was booming late last year during which she had befriended people working on the Keystone XL oil pipeline.

While President Biden has advertised job creation as a prominent goal moving into the later stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, 14 Republican attorneys general from across the country are sounding the alarm on his administration’s abrupt cancellation of the Keystone XL Pipeline.

Led by Montana Attorney General Austin Knudsen, attorneys general from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, and West Virginia penned a joint letter urging Biden to reevaluate his position.

On his first day in office, President Biden signed an executive order revoking the permit for the Keystone XL oil pipeline, pleasing climate activists and Indigenous groups. If completed, Keystone would span nearly 1,200 miles, carrying carbon-heavy oil south from Canada to the Gulf Coast.
