That said, there’s plenty of good news, including some new things to check out. You can do them all in one day, but why not make a weekend of it and fit in some of your old faves, too? Here’s a look. NEWPORT, R.I. — Spring is sprouting in Newport, and we’re here for it. ā€œIt’s so close to home, but it has that vacation vibe,ā€ says Dr. Seth Jones of Marstons Mills, who recently headed there for a quick family getaway. Never mind that it’s not quite sailing-and-al fresco-oyster-slurping-season...

I asked Newport Historical Society executive director Becca Bertrand to tell us more about tonight’s event and the role Newport will play in the Semiquincentennial. Q: First, Newport’s role...

The grant cuts, which Rhode Island Attorney General Peter F. Neronha said came with no warning or legally valid explanation, have quickly caused chaos for state health agencies that continue to rely on these critical funds for a wide range of urgent public health programs , including infectious disease management, fortifying emergency preparedness, providing mental health and substance abuse services, and modernizing public health infrastructure.

Rhode Island, meanwhile, expects to lose another $31 million in grant money, state officials said. Losing the grants from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is ā€œpotentially devastating to public health,ā€ said Dr. Robbie Goldstein, the state’s public health commissioner, in a statement. Massachusetts stands to lose $100 million in public health funds as federal authorities terminate billions in grant money, state officials said Wednesday. New Hampshire officials did not respond to a request for information about how the cuts affected that state.

Another segment of the housing market performed better last month. Last month, single-family homes sold for a median price of $455,500, a 3.5 percent year-on-year rise from February 2024. Pending sales, which is a forward looking indicator, fell more than 10 percent, in what realtors described as a sign of ā€œwaningā€ demand from buyers. PROVIDENCE — Single-family home sales in Rhode Island plunged nearly 9 percent in February compared to the same time last year amid a continuing increase in prices , the state’s Association of Realtors said on Friday....

LONDON (AP) — A large fire near London’s Heathrow Airport knocked out power Friday to Europe’s busiest flight hub, forcing it to shut and disrupting global travel for hundreds of thousands of passengers. Heathrow said it didn’t know when power would be restored — raising the possibility that the shutdown would last longer than just the day, as previously expected. At least 1,350 flights to and from Heathrow were affected, flight tracking service FlightRadar 24 said, and the impact was likely to last several days as passengers try to reschedule...

The Community College of Rhode Island will offer voluntary retirement incentives to up to 109 employees this year, part of an effort to ā€œhelp the college in rightsizing and right-shaping its workforce in a manner that effectively supports the college’s strategic initiatives,ā€ according to a memo from interim President Rosemary A. Costigan. The retirement program will be offered to employees with a combination of age and years of service of 80, and eligible workers must be at least 55 years old and have 10 years on the job at the...

Monday’s protest was organized by the Rhode Island Party for Socialism and Liberation, along with friends of Alawieh, one of the few kidney transplant doctors in the state. Alawieh was returning from a trip to Lebanon to visit her parents when she was prevented from reentering the US and was later placed on a flight to Paris. Friends and colleagues said she had arrived in Lebanon by Sunday morning. PROVIDENCE — Over 200 people gathered on the lawn of the State House Monday night to support Dr. Rasha Alawieh ,...
