The chief executives of NPR and PBS faced questions in a March 26 congressional hearing as Congress considers legislation that would prohibit federal funding for the public broadcasters.

As longtime NPR editor Uri Berliner reported last year, he investigated D.C. voting records and found “87 registered Democrats working in editorial positions and zero Republicans.”

"We have deep concerns regarding the editorial direction under NPR's national leadership," wrote a group of Republicans in a letter on Monday led by Sen. Kevin Cramer, R-N.D.

National Public Radio has every right to operate as a left-wing propaganda outlet masquerading as a legitimate news organization. But it is not entitled to pursue this goal with taxpayer money. The latest revelations about the ideological rot at NPR have only made this case stronger.

NPR has formally punished Uri Berliner, the senior editor who publicly argued a week ago that the network had "lost America's trust" by approaching news stories with a rigidly progressive mindset.

Berliner's five-day suspension without pay, which began last Friday, has not been previously reported.

National Public Radio has suspended an editor who has repeatedly criticized the outlet in recent days, alleging a left-leaning bias that he says is hurting the organization’s journalism.

Uri Berliner, a senior editor who has worked at NPR for more than 20 years, was suspended last week by the company for five days without pay, NPR’s media reporter David Folkenflik reported Tuesday.

2024 has not been kind to American journalism. Mainstream news outlets — including NBC News, CBS, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, TIME and Business Insider — have laid off hundreds of staffers. Publishers and media analysts have been casting about for possible explanations, whether difficult economic headwinds, the collapse of ad revenue or Americans’ “news fatigue” ahead of another presidential election.
