Doubt is at the heart of every criminal defense: Beyond a reasonable doubt, did Derek Chauvin cause the death of George Floyd, and if so, what was the degree of his intent? Eric Nelson, a defense attorney for the former Minneapolis police officer, hammered this question home to the jury in closing arguments Monday. While the jurors might have thought the prosecution’s evidence was convincing, that wasn’t enough.

The Derek Chauvin verdict has been nearly a year in the making. Footage of the murder of George Floyd last May has been viewed by millions worldwide, sparking ongoing international protests against police brutality and igniting policy changes to reform and reimagine the role of police. Though the amount of video footage of the killing was unprecedented and the momentum for justice was undeniable, history did not necessarily point to an easy conviction.

The jury has spoken. Derek Chauvin is guilty on all charges. Now it’s time for politicians to do what they haven’t done so far — act responsibly.

President Biden was completely wrong to weigh in on Tuesday, saying that he was praying for a guilty verdict. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) was of course worse, saying crowds should get “more confrontational” if former officer Derek Chauvin was found not guilty. It was incitement, and it’s shameful that Democrats defeated a censure vote against her.
