President Joe Biden and a bipartisan group of 21 senators reached a compromise Thursday to modernize the nation's deteriorating transportation and public works systems, putting the president in position to pass the first plank of his sweeping infrastructure agenda.

Yet Biden made clear he would only sign a bipartisan infrastructure bill if Congress also approves a larger measure focused on "human infrastructure" programs like subsidized child care, home caregiving and climate change that only Democrats support.

President Joe Biden said Thursday he has agreed to a deal on infrastructure with a bipartisan group of senators after White House officials and the senators had a massive breakthrough the night before in their infrastructure negotiations.

Both Republican and Democratic senators said Wednesday evening there was an agreement reached with White House officials and 10 senators on a bipartisan infrastructure deal. And on Thursday afternoon, Biden said he had signed off on the agreement. 

President Joe Biden announced an agreement on a bipartisan infrastructure package Thursday, giving his stamp of approval to a plan spearheaded by ten senators. The new consensus marks the end to many weeks of negotiations and partisan gridlock over the president’s chief legislative priority.

“We have a deal,” Biden said outside the White House shortly after the deal broke. “We have made serious compromises on both ends.”
