On Monday night, former President Donald Trump won the Iowa GOP Caucuses with 51% of the vote, and the results were announced within 30 minutes after caucusing began. What does this mean for the 2024 presidential election?
Key Details: Results showed Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis coming in second with 21.2% and former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley coming in third with 19.1%. Businessman Vivek Ramaswamy suspended his campaign after placing fourth with 7.7%. The non-Trump vote will likely stay divided with the close result between DeSantis and Haley.
Key Quote: Kari Lake, a Trump supporter who is now running for Senate in Arizona, said non-Trump GOP candidates "don’t have a chance to win. For them to pour hundreds of millions of dollars into Iowa and New Hampshire to try to bring down an incredible candidate…would be unfortunate. I hope they take a little break, do a little soul-searching and recognize that President Trump is the man to help save America.”
For Context: Trump's win moves the country one step closer to setting up a general election showdown between President Joe Biden and the eventual Republican presidential nominee.
