President Donald Trump sent a memorandum to four federal department heads Friday night instructing them to allow the military to use and take jurisdiction of federal land along the US-Mexico border.

The newest effort from the Trump administration to secure the southern border includes authorizing the military to take control of public land along the border.

“The complexity of the current situation requires that our military take a more direct role in securing our southern border than in the recent past,” a White House memorandum said.

The U.S. military will take control of a strip of federal land that spans three states along the southern border in an effort to stem illegal immigration, a memorandum Friday by President Donald Trump said. 

U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Shoshana Chatfield, who holds a senior position in NATO, has been fired as part of what appears to be an expanding national security purge of top officials by the Trump administration, three sources told Reuters on Monday.

The information was not immediately confirmed by the Pentagon. However, the sources told Reuters that allies had been notified that Chatfield had been removed from her job.

A heavy vehicle that was carrying four U.S. Army soldiers has been found submerged in a swamp in Lithuania, a day after the soldiers disappeared while on a training mission, the U.S. military said on Wednesday.

The vehicle was discovered after a search by the U.S. Army, the Lithuanian military and other Lithuanian authorities, the U.S. military said in a statement. The soldiers have not been found.

The Navy has a new civilian leader with a hefty business resume but no military experience after the Senate voted Monday evening to approve John Phelan as the service's secretary.

The Senate voted 62-30 to confirm Phelan as Navy secretary, making him the civilian head of both the Navy and Marine Corps and putting him in charge of the health and well-being of more than 1 million sailors, Marines, reservists and civilian personnel and an annual budget of more than $250 billion.
