Myanmar's ruling military declared a temporary ceasefire in the country's civil war Wednesday to facilitate relief efforts following a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that has killed more than 3,000 people.

The surprise announcement by military leaders who also head the unelected government came late Wednesday on state television MRTV, which said the halt in fighting would run until April 22 to show compassion for people affected by Friday's quake.

A powerful earthquake has hit Myanmar and neighbouring Thailand, destroying buildings, damaging infrastructure and killing more than 150 people.

Myanmar’s state-run MRTV reported that at least 144 people were killed on Friday and 732 were injured in the country. The quake also hit Thailand, where at least nine people were killed in the capital, Bangkok, according to local authorities.

W fillets, fake eyelashes and animated children’s shows all have in common? All these familiar parts of Western daily lives have recently been touched by North Korean labour. In an online shopping world where many consumers hit the “sort by price” button, North Korea’s combination of low-cost and high-skilled labour is irresistible for contractors with a tight bottom line.

Four Canadians were executed in China on drug-related charges earlier this year, Canadian authorities have confirmed.

All of them were dual citizens and their identities have been withheld, Canada's foreign minister Mélanie Joly said.

A spokesperson for the Chinese embassy in Canada reportedly urged Ottawa to "stop making irresponsible remarks", as pundits feared a further downturn in relations between the countries after years of strain.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte was detained on Tuesday after the Philippine government said it received an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant for his arrest for alleged crimes against humanity.

Duterte has been investigated by the ICC over his brutal anti-drugs crackdown during his time in office that killed more than 6,000 people based on police data, though independent monitors believe the number of extrajudicial killings could be much higher.

I as a stand for “principles of fairness” against an uncaring foreign tech giant. Such was the heady rhetoric Indonesia’s ministers deployed throughout the country’s stand-off with Apple, which began in October, when Indonesia banned the sale of the newest iPhone. The saga reached a denouement on February 26th, with a $320m investment deal signed by Apple and the government.

O Prabowo Subianto, Indonesia’s president, launched Danantara, a sovereign-wealth fund. At his disposal it will immediately be the largest businesses in Indonesia’s sizeable portfolio of state-owned enterprises, which have been transferred to Danantara and are worth around $900bn. Unlike an older sovereign-wealth fund, its management will report directly to the president, bypassing the conservative ministry of finance. Dividends from state-owned enterprises will flow into Danantara, not the ministry’s coffers.

India is home to 1.4 billion people but around a billion lack money to spend on any discretionary goods or services, a new report estimates.

The country's consuming class, effectively the potential market for start-ups or business owners, is only about as big as Mexico, 130-140 million people, according to the report from Blume Ventures, a venture capital firm.

President Donald Trump, his vice president and his defense secretary delivered a triple blow to this age-old understanding last week, when they effectively severed the collaboration that had served this country and its European countries through two world wars, numerous economic, diplomatic and military flare-ups and countless other global challenges over our history as a nation.

Lauded Japanese auteur Miike Takashi sat down for an in-conversation event with longtime collaborator and producer Misako Saka at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, where he is also screening “Blazing Fists.” The duo discussed their partnership as well as the impact of the director’s work in Japanese and international cinema. On 1999’s “Audition,” Miike said he still believes the film to be “terribly violent” despite not having “set out to make a violent film.” “It became a violent movie as a result of the main character and working with actors...
