CHICAGO — In line with one of his key campaign promises, Mayor Brandon Johnson this week canceled Chicago’s multi-million-dollar contract for ShotSpotter, the controversial, unreliable and otherwise flawed gunshot-detection technology. “Moving forward, the city of Chicago will deploy its resources on the most effective strategies and tactics proven to accelerate the current downward trend in violent crime,” Johnson said in a news release.

The city of Chicago will end its relationship with ShotSpotter after the summer ends, announced Mayor Brandon Johnson. On Tuesday morning, the mayor released a statement saying that the city would not renew its contract with SoundThinking, the company behind the gun detection technology, which was set to expire on Friday. He also said the city will fully end its use of it on Sept. 22. “During the interim period, law enforcement and other community safety stakeholders will assess tools and programs that effectively increase both safety and trust, and...

CHICAGO — The City of Chicago will end its controversial ShotSpotter contract, which ends this Friday. The gunshot-detection system will be decommissioned entirely on Sept. 22, fulfilling a campaign promise made by Mayor Brandon Johnson. “During the interim period, law enforcement and other community safety stakeholders will assess tools and programs that effectively increase both safety and trust, and issue recommendations to that effect,” Johnson said in a statement.

A witness has testified at the murder trial of a former Ohio sheriff’s deputy that he saw the man who was killed not long before the shooting but that he didn’t see a gun. The defendant, Jason Meade, testified that he feared for his life after Casey Goodson Jr. waved a gun at him as they drove past each other in Columbus in December 2020. He said he pursued Goodson in his unmarked vehicle and that Goodson aimed a gun at him again, right before the shooting occurred. Prosecutors have...

CHICAGO — Mayor Brandon Johnson announced Tuesday that Chicago is not renewing the city’s ShotSpotter contract. The mayor said the contract with ShotSpotter’s owner, “SoundThinking,” ends on Friday — but the technology itself will work until Sept. 22. Officers will have access to SpotShotter throughout the summer and during the Democratic National Convention in August. Johnson said over the next months, law enforcement and community leaders will assess other gun violence prevention tools and give recommendations.

CHICAGO — Mayor Brandon Johnson is following through on a campaign promise to get rid of a controversial gunshot detection technology — but not until after the summer. The Mayor’s Office announced Tuesday in a news release it will not renew its contract with ShotSpotter come Friday and will “decommission” the technology Sept. 22. The decision comes as the city was facing a Friday deadline for its $49 million contract with ShotSpotter, which operates a network of acoustic sensors to alert police of gunfire. It’s unclear how the city will...

Mayor Brandon Johnson announced Tuesday he will not extend the Chicago Police Department’s contract with ShotSpotter, fulfilling a key campaign promise to end the use of the controversial gunshot detection system embraced by police brass even as it was blasted by the city’s watchdog as ineffective. Johnson said in a statement the city will stop using the ShotSpotter technology by Sept. 22 – one month after the Democratic National Convention takes place in Chicago and after the summer months that are often the most violent period of the year. “Moving...

Mayor Brandon Johnson will end the city’s usage of a controversial gunshot detection technology, making good on a campaign promise that progressives rallied behind. Before the city decommissions ShotSpotter in September, “law enforcement and other community safety stakeholders will assess tools and programs that effectively increase both safety and trust, and issue recommendations to that effect,” the Johnson administration said in a statement.
