The Transportation Security Administration is exploring how bringing a little DIY ethic to its airport security operations may help improve and speed up the process, unveiling a new self-screening system at Las Vegas’ Harry Reid International Airport on Thursday. The new system, currently only available to TSA PreCheck pass holders, features an automated ā€œbucketā€ conveyor system that whisks carry-ons and pocket items through a scanner while passengers enter a glass-paneled cubicle and follow step-by-step visual prompts displayed on a large video screen to execute a self-scan.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – Getting through security can be the worst part of traveling, but that could all change thanks to new technology being tested in Las Vegas. Federal airport security officials unveiled passenger self-screening lanes Wednesday at Harry Reid International Airport, with plans to test it for use in other cities around the country. The Transportation Security Administration began developing the new system five years ago to make screening more efficient and give passengers more autonomy. The system is designed to let passengers control the pace of their screening....

A new self-service screening system will be put to real-life testing with passengers at Harry Reid International Airport. The Transportation Security Administration started to develop this system five years ago with the goal of making screening more efficient and giving passengers more autonomy. Starting on Monday, PreCheck passengers can participate in the pilot program designed to modernize checkpoints and give travelers more autonomy. Travel better with news, tips and guides that make you feel like a local wherever you go. In your inbox, Thursdays. During the morning demonstration at the Las Vegas airport, TSA officials compared the new program to self-checkout lanes at the supermarket.
