Mark Carney was sworn in as Canada’s 24th prime minister Friday in the middle of a trade war and with an election battle on the way.

To win the next election, the new prime minister must quickly prove he is Canada’s best hope of managing relations with the White House. On Friday, Carney introduced his new Cabinet built to go head-to-head with President Donald Trump’s administration, as Ottawa lawmakers navigate the fallout of the president’s protectionist policies that one way or another will reshape Canada’s economy.

Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico is in a "life-threatening condition" in hospital after being shot in what his office has called an "assassination attempt."

"Today, after the government meeting in Handlova, there was an assassination attempt on the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic, Robert Fico," the government said.

Local broadcaster TA3 reported that four shots were fired in the central Slovakian town, one hitting Prime Minister Fico in the stomach.

Haiti's Prime Minister Ariel Henry has agreed to resign following weeks of mounting pressure and increasing violence in the impoverished country.

It comes after regional leaders met in Jamaica on Monday to discuss a political transition in Haiti.

Mr Henry is currently stranded in Puerto Rico after being prevented by armed gangs from returning home.

In a video address announcing his resignation, Mr Henry urged Haitians to remain calm.

"The government that I am leading will resign immediately after the installation of [a transition] council," Mr Henry said.

In 2018, Haiti was one of the countries that Donald Trump allegedly included on his “s**thole” nations list when talking about immigration. It set off a firestorm of condemnation, with many liberal figures trying to debunk the main premise. Haiti isn’t trash; it’s a treasure of the tropics. That had a shelf life of about 10 seconds, and now the people making that point are looking increasingly ridiculous as the island nation has become wracked with crime and murder and is on the brink of civil war.
