Georgia officials have confirmed the state's first case of bird flu, halting all in-state poultry exhibitions, shows, swaps, meets, and sales until further notice. A poultry producer in Elbert County on Wednesday noticed signs of avian flu in their flock, according to the Georgia Department of Agriculture (GDA) and the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service. Samples were tested and confirmed by the Georgia Poultry Laboratory Network and USDA’s National Veterinary Services Laboratory.

CHICAGO, Jan 17 (Reuters) - U.S. poultry producers should ramp up testing and monitoring of turkeys for bird flu before they are slaughtered to ensure the virus stays out of the food supply, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said on Friday. The agency is advising enhanced safety measures in Minnesota and South Dakota, where turkey flocks with more than 500 birds should be isolated, monitored and tested for bird flu within 72 hours before going to slaughter, USDA said. Other states may be included later, the agency added. "The new...

The first human death from bird flu in the United States occurred on January 6 in a Louisiana hospital, less than three weeks before the second Donald Trump administration’s inauguration. Bird flu, also known as Avian influenza or H5N1, is a disease that has been on the watch list of scientists and epidemiologists for its potential to become a serious threat to humans. COVID-19’s chaotic handling during Trump’s first term serves as a stark reminder of the stakes. According to the Centers (CDC) and Prevention, last year, 66 confirmed human...

Officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that hospitals speed up testing people who are hospitalized with the flu for H5N1 bird flu. Healthcare workers in hospitals are urged to perform additional testing on patients hospitalized with Influenza A—ideally within 24 hours of admission—to determine if they have bird flu, according to a CDC advisory issued Thursday. The advisory comes amid concerns that cases of H5N1 avian influenza will sicken more people in the United States. CDC officials confirmed earlier this week that a second San Francisco...

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an advisory Thursday urging health-care workers treating patients hospitalized with the flu to perform an additional test for bird flu within 24 hours of admission. The advisory reflects increasing concerns about the widening outbreak of H5N1 avian influenza that is sickening more people and animals in the United States and Canada. Earlier this month, a Louisiana man became the first person in the United States to die from bird flu. A severe infection nearly killed a Canadian girl who was hospitalized for...
