New England car sales giant Herb Chambers has agreed to sell his eponymous company for $1.34 billion.

Duluth, Georgia-based Asbury Automotive will take control of The Herb Chambers Companies, which includes 33 dealerships, 52 franchises, and three collision centers, according to an announcement released Tuesday morning. Herb Chamber Companies brought in $2.9 billion in revenue in 2024.

Chambers will serve as special advisor to Asbury and will retain ownership of Mercedes-Benz of Boston in Somerville.

Herb Chambers Companies, the ubiquitous New England auto dealership chain, is being acquired by the Georgia-based Asbury Automotive Group in a $1.34 billion deal, the companies announced Tuesday. The deal, which is expected to close later this year, brings a close to Herb Chambers’ decades-long oversight by its founder and principal of the same name, who founded the Somerville-based company in 1985 after purchasing a car dealership in Connecticut.
