At least 130 people were killed in a terror attack on the outskirts of Moscow on Friday.

The Details: ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack, which took place at a concert by the Russian rock band Picnic. The U.S., which reportedly warned Russia of a threat earlier this month, said it believes ISIS-K, a branch of the organization based in Afghanistan, was responsible for the attack. Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) said officials have detained 11 individuals in connection with the attack so far. As of early March 23, Russian President Vladimir Putin had not publicly commented on the attack. Additionally, at least 145 have been injured, several of whom were reported to be in a critical state

For Context: The attack is one of the worst terror attacks in the nation’s history. On March 7, the U.S. embassy warned U.S. citizens to avoid concerts in Moscow. Russia has also recently endured strikes on its territory from Ukraine, and pro-Ukrainian saboteurs, but recently the U.S. urged Ukraine to halt attacks on Russian oil refineries.

How The Media Covered It: Most Western media sources centered coverage around ISIS’ alleged involvement. ZeroHedge (Lean Right bias) noted “widespread scrutiny and debate” around ISIS’ claim. The Guardian (Lean Left bias) reported, “There are already signs that Moscow will try to pin blame for the attack on Ukraine.” Russian state media agency TASS, and state-funded RT (Lean Right bias) did not mention ISIS in their coverage.

Russia’s security services say they have arrested four gunmen responsible for the shooting that killed at least 115 people at a concert hall on the outskirts of Moscow, in one of the worst terror attacks in the country’s history.

The director of Russia’s federal security service (FSB) informed Vladimir Putin that 11 individuals had been arrested in connection with Friday’s terrorist attack at the Crocus City Hall outside Moscow, including four suspects involved in the shooting.

Russian authorities said they had detained 11 people in connection with a terrorist attack on a concert hall in a Moscow suburb, as the death toll from the Friday night assault rose to 115, investigators said.

Among those taken into custody were four people who prosecutors said played a direct role in the violence, in which gunmen shot audience members at close range and set off smoke bombs.

Russia’s Investigative Committee has claimed that the number of deaths following Friday evening’s massacre at the Crocus City concert hall near Moscow has been confirmed at 115 people and warned that this figure is likely to rise.

The service had previously stated that the death toll was 93, but later issued an update announcing that additional bodies were found after emergency services started clearing the rubble.
