House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner (R-OH) is demanding answers from the White Houseā€˜s chief of staff on what, if any, classified information was discussed in meetings with President Joe Biden that were attended by his son, Hunter Biden.

In a letter sent Wednesday to chief of staff Jeff Zients, Turner is requesting ā€œfull accounting of any classified information discussed or disclosed in these meetings.ā€

An earlier draft of the bill was rejected by 19 Republicans who felt it didn’t go far enough to reform the system and protect civil liberties. The House Rules Committee on April 11 advanced a modified version of a bill to reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA). The rule, which passed the committee in an 8–4 party-line vote, will now be teed up for a vote on the House floor. The FISA legislation included in the rule is a modified version of Rep. Laurel Lee’s (R-Fla.)...

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner, R-Ohio, released an unusual statement Wednesday warning of a "serious national security threat" without providing additional details, pre-empting what the White House said was a planned briefing for congressional leaders.

Four sources with knowledge of the issue told NBC News that the threat is a Russian military capability.

President Joe Biden has been tracking the national security threat and directed White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan to engage congressional leaders, according to two U.S. officials.

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said ā€œthere is no need for public alarmā€ after House Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Turner (R-Ohio) called on President Biden to declassify information about a ā€œserious national security threat.ā€

ā€œI saw Chairman Turner’s statement on the issue and I want to assure the American people, there is no need for public alarm,ā€ Johnson told reporters in the Capitol on Wednesday. ā€œWe are going to work together to address this matter, as we do all sensitive matters that are classified.ā€

CNN anchor Dana Bash confronted Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) on Sunday over allegations that he politicized intelligence information when he chaired the House Intelligence Committee.

Last week, House Speaker Kevin McCarthy unceremoniously booted Schiff from the House Intelligence Committee. McCarthy explained that Schiff's past conduct — allegedly politicizing intelligence access — meant his position on the committee, which receives access to national secrets that other members of Congress do not, could threaten national security.

Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio), the new chairman of the House intelligence committee, says the Department of Justice may not bar members of Congress from reviewing classified material found at the home and office of Joe Biden and at the homes of Donald Trump and Mike Pence.

"Congress has subpoena power, and its ability to compel the administration is absolute," Turner told ABC's "This Week" with Martha Raddatz:

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on Tuesday night rejected the reappointments of Reps. Adam Schiff and Eric Swalwell, both D-Calif., to the powerful House Intelligence Committee -- fulfilling a promise McCarthy made even before he won the gavel.

The committee has special rules that allow the speaker to assign its members in consultation with the minority leader.

While the minority party's recommendations have typically been seated, McCarthy has the power to decline to seat members without relying on a full floor vote of the chamber.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Tuesday said he will block Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.) from taking seats on the House Intelligence Committee, in a move that the speaker insists is not political payback for the Democrats’ decision to strip hard-right lawmakers from their committee assignments during the last term.
