A Portland man on Tuesday pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in a St. John Street shooting that still has more questions than answers. Abdirahman Mahmoud, 36, is accused of killing 30-year-old Raoul Tshiyuka, whom police said they found shot early in the morning March 2. Mahmoud’s appearance at Cumberland County Superior Court was brief, just long enough for him to deny responsibility for “intentionally or knowingly” causing Tshiyuka’s death. He is being held without bail. It remains unclear how police identified Mahmoud as a suspect. SWAT teams searched...

Prosecutors are seeking a four-year prison sentence and three years of supervised release for Portsmouth High School shooting threat suspect Kyle Hendrickson, while his defense maintains he never intended to carry out a shooting. The 26-year-old from Berwick, Maine is set to be sentenced in federal court in Concord Tuesday, May 14 on two charges handed down by the U.S. attorney’s office for the District of New Hampshire. Hendrickson pleaded guilty to charges of interstate threatening communications and possessing a firearm in a school zone in November. The...

Portland, Oregon—Measure 110, the landmark statewide drug decriminalization initiative that Oregon passed in 2020 with 58 percent of the vote, had no sooner gotten off the ground than its most prominent plank—which decriminalized the possession of small amounts of drugs—was scuttled by the state Legislature this past April. House Bill 4002 recriminalizes “user” amounts of drugs, allowing people to avoid jail time of up to six months only if they seek treatment right away, while leaving in place the grant funding for low-barrier treatment programs created by Measure 110. Its...

Bissell Brothers Brewing is launching The Garden, an upscale “restaurant within a restaurant” concept at their Thompson’s Point flagship location on Thursday. The new restaurant is located in the 3,500-square-foot space that was formerly home to Rosemont Market and Wine Bar at 38 Resurgam Place in Portland. The Garden spotlights cuisine and wines from northern Italy and the Adriatic Sea region, while Bissell’s adjacent taproom will continue to feature a pub-style menu. “There was interest in the staff to do something different,” owner Peter Bissell explained. “We have one environment...

PORTLAND, Maine — Red Sox righthander Brayan Bello proclaimed himself ready to return to the big leagues following a 52-pitch, 2⅔-inning rehab start with Double A Portland against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies on Tuesday. Bello (0-1 with a 3.93 ERA in 18⅓ innings this year) was pitching in a game for the first time since April 19. Five days later, he landed on the injured list due to right lat tightness. Despite unspectacular results Tuesday, Bello said he is pain-free and recovered from the injury. He yielded a solo homer...

Brayan Bello didn’t get the results he wanted in his rehab start at Hadlock Field on Tuesday night. The right-hander threw 2 2/3 innings for the Portland Sea Dogs against the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, allowing three runs, two earned, with three hits, two walks, and five strikeouts. But as he eyes a return to the Boston Red Sox rotation after going on the injured list April 24 with right lat tightness, Bello pitched pain free, and feels ready to go for the Red Sox on Sunday against the Washington Nationals....

Washington County prosecutors Monday charged a 53-year-old Portland grandmother with criminally mistreating and endangering the life of her 10-month-old granddaughter after police say the baby tested positive for fentanyl.

Tigard police said an officer was patrolling the Tigard Plaza Shopping Center on Friday at about 10:30 p.m. when he happened upon an unlicensed Jeep that was parked with its engine running. A woman in the driver’s seat appeared to be passed out with drug paraphernalia and a powdery white substance, later determined to be fentanyl, in the car.

Incense wafted through the air of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, silent as dozens of priests, bishops and other dignitaries began their slow procession through the sanctuary. Among them was Bishop James Thomas Ruggieri, who bowed his head and lifted his hands to greet the hundreds of faithful Catholics who traveled to Portland on Tuesday to celebrate his ordination and installment as the 13th bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Portland. Jessica Ciszewski said she drove nearly five hours to from New Sweden, a small town in Aroostook...
