A Texas bankruptcy judge has rejected a proposed liquidation of conspiracy theorist Alex Jones’ company Free Speech Systems, the parent company of Infowars, saying that a denial of the bankruptcy plan was, in his opinion, in the best interest of the creditors. But the judge approved a separate liquidation of Jones’ personal assets.

The U.S. Justice Department announced a $138.7 million settlement Tuesday with more than 100 people who accused the FBI of grossly mishandling allegations of sexual assault against Larry Nassar in 2015 and 2016, a critical time gap that allowed the sports doctor to continue to prey on victims before his arrest.

When combined with other settlements, $1 billion now has been set aside by various organizations to compensate hundreds of women who said Nassar assaulted them under the guise of treatment for sports injuries.

A controversial Florida bill, dubbed by critics as "Don’t Say Gay," is being upheld under a settlement reached Monday in federal court that will allow students and teachers to discuss sexual orientation and gender identity freely, so long as it’s not part of instruction. 

Air Canada has been ordered to pay compensation to a grieving grandchild who claimed they were misled into purchasing full-price flight tickets by an ill-informed chatbot.

In an argument that appeared to flabbergast a small claims adjudicator in British Columbia, the airline attempted to distance itself from its own chatbot's bad advice by claiming the online tool was "a separate legal entity that is responsible for its own actions."

"This is a remarkable submission," Civil Resolution Tribunal (CRT) member Christopher Rivers wrote.

Air Canada is on the hook for $812.02 after its chatbot mistakenly told a customer that bereavement fares could be applied retroactively.

Following the death of his grandmother in November 2022, Vancouver resident Jake Moffatt booked flights using the website’s chatbot, which advised him he could pay full fare and apply for a bereavement fare later, according to the decision by B.C. civil resolution tribunal.

Sandy Hook families who won nearly $1.5 billion in legal judgments against conspiracy theorist Alex Jones for calling the 2012 Connecticut school shooting a hoax have offered to settle that debt for only pennies on the dollar — at least $85 million over 10 years.

The offer was made in Jones' personal bankruptcy case in Houston last week. In a legal filing, lawyers for the families said they believed the proposal was a viable way to help resolve the bankruptcy reorganization cases of both Jones and his company, Free Speech Systems.

Kroger on Friday said it has agreed to pay $1.2 billion to U.S. states, local governments and Native American tribes to settle the majority of claims that it fueled the opioid epidemic through lax oversight of its pill sales. 

The settlement would allow for “full resolution” of all claims on behalf of those parties, the company said in a release ahead of its fiscal second-quarter earnings. Kroger is now the latest retail pharmacy chain to announce a nationwide settlement agreement after Walgreens, CVS and Walmart did last fall.

Kroger has reached a $1.2 billion national settlement for communities affected by its opioid sales, with an additional $36 million for Native American tribes.

The company’s public shares dropped on Friday after the grocery store giant's second-quarter earnings report. The agreement will result in a $1.4 billion charge to its second-quarter earnings, a tally that equates to around $1.54 per share. Similar economic consequences have affected various pharmaceutical retailers, such as Walgreens, Walmart, CVS, and Rite Aid.

The grocery chain Kroger said on Friday it had agreed to pay about $1.2 billion to states, local governments and Native American tribes to settle claims that its retail pharmacies played a role in fueling the opioid crisis.

Kroger, which was accused of improperly monitoring prescriptions of highly addictive painkillers filled in its store pharmacies, said it would pay the settlement over 11 years, beginning in December. The company said that legal fees, which will be paid over six years, would add $177 million to the total.

New York City will shell out $13 million to protesters who were arrested by NYPD officers during the 2020 demonstrations over the murder of George Floyd.

Nearly 1,400 people arrested in the protests can receive at least $9,950 under an historic settlement to a class action lawsuit unveiled late Wednesday in a Manhattan federal court.

The settlement — covers 18 protests across the city between May 28, 2020, and June 4, 2020 — pointedly doesn't include an admission of wrongdoing for the NYPD's widely criticized and often brutal response to the protests.
