The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) has reportedly placed several members of its election security team on administrative leave. The Associated Press, citing a person familiar with the situation, reports that 17 CISA employees have been placed on leave pending review. The employees had worked with election officials to counter a range of cybersecurity threats, including ransomware and the physical security of election workers.

TikTok is now subject to not one but two open Digital Services Act (DSA) investigations after the European Union announced on Tuesday that it has opened a formal proceeding focused on election risks — and specifically risks in the context of recent elections in Romania. The probe will focus on TikTok’s recommender systems — principally ā€œrisks linked to the coordinated inauthentic manipulation or automated exploitation of the serviceā€, per the Commission. The EU will also look at TikTok’s policies on political advertisements and paid-for political content. ā€œAs regards both elements,...

Trump, who has falsely denied that he lost the 2020 election, including his 10.1 percentage-point loss in Virginia, said in a post on his Truth Social network that Youngkin has set an example for other states. His message highlighted the state’s requirement that Virginians can only vote on paper ballots, as they did in his 2020 and 2016 losses here. ā€œThe beautiful Commonwealth of Virginia, superbly led by Governor Glenn Youngkin, IS TAKING A STRONG LEAD IN SECURING THE ELECTION IN NOVEMBER — PROTECTING EVERY LEGAL VOTE AND KEEPING ILLEGAL...

ā€œIt really begins with the recognition that Virginia is the crucible of democracy, and therefore all Virginians who are eligible to vote, all Virginia citizens should vote,ā€ Youngkin told reporters Wednesday at an event to announce record state Lottery profits. ā€œWith that, all Virginians who are voting, the citizens of Virginia, should be confident that the votes will be counted accurately, and the elections are fair, and that is at the heart of executive order,ā€ he said. This means, as state law and regulation now say, that officers of elections...

Former President Donald Trump touted Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s (R-VA) executive order on election security as Republicans look to flip Virginia this November. On Wednesday, Youngkin issued an executive order enhancing ballot security, establishing counting machine testing, and strengthening voter list maintenance. Trump heralded the measure on social media, arguing it keeps non-citizens from accessing swing-state voter rolls.

The executive order directs added verification measures; almost 80,000 deceased voters have been removed from the voter rolls. Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed an executive order on Aug. 7 to implement security measures ahead of the November election. These measures include using paper ballots; tracking possession of ballots during early voting; matching the number of ballots cast with the number of voters who have checked in and the number of ballots sent to voters; and requiring absentee ballots to be requested before being mailed to voters, in addition to not...

The FBI is going to resume its coordination with social-media companies on content moderation ahead of the 2024 election, after the Supreme Court dealt a blow to free-speech advocates who argue the federal government’s close cooperation with Big Tech firms violates the First Amendment.

According to a Department of Justice memo drafted earlier this month, the FBI ā€œwill resume regular meetings in the coming weeks with social media companies to brief and discuss potential [Foreign Malign Influence] threats involving the companies’ platforms.ā€

Rep. Mike Garcia, R-Santa Clarita, voted in favor of H.R. 8281, the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which passed the House. This bill would better ensure the integrity and security of federal elections by requiring that individuals provide proof of citizenship when registering to vote, according to a news release from the congressman’s office. ā€œRight now, less than half of Americans have confidence in the security of our election process,ā€ Garcia said in the release. ā€œAnd nearly 80% of Americans across both political parties are supportive of requiring photo...
