Why is AllSides curating humor and satire content?

Well, because it can be a fantastic bridge and relationship builder, helping people to diffuse tension and appreciate the other perspective. Our ability to relate to each other as human beings is foundational to civil society’s success. Laughter and levity encourage us to let our guard down, and that vulnerability aids us in strengthening human connections and uncovering common ground.

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The City of Austin could take another swing at its long-term comprehensive housing goals. The Housing Department applied for a $10 million federal grant to do it. “An update to the blueprint is going to take a couple years so the housing department is already looking right now at how we can make sure that five years down the road we have an update ready to go,” said Austin City Council Member Ryan Alter. In 2017, Austin City Council set forward lofty housing goals, called the Strategic...

The Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office on Tuesday afternoon released video of a deputy fatally shooting a man who advanced toward deputies holding a knife during a March 23 deadly confrontation outside a Rio Linda home. Christopher Gilmore, 38, was shot to death in front of the home in the 6500 block of Campanile Street even though he posed no public threat and was suffering from a mental health crisis, lawyers representing Gilmore’s family have said. The lawyers last month released a one-minute video clip of the fatal shooting captured on...

While about a third of patients at the center are Native American, the...

Four men on trial for murder in Contra Costa County will be spending a lot less time in prison than expected. The trial, which stems from a scandal involving racist text messages from Antioch police officers, is being called a landmark case and is the first major test of the state's Racial Justice Act. "This has been a reckoning for everyone involved, and there is no outcome that can ever satisfy anyone in this case," Contra Costa County Chief Assitant District Attorney Simon O'Connell said. The outcome of what was...

CINCINNATI — On Tuesday morning, MLB Network devoted about a nine-minute segment to Corbin Carroll’s struggles, comparing his swing mechanics from last year to this year. There was talk of his stride length, his use of his back leg and the placement of his hands, all of which seemed centered on his inability to hit high fastballs. So, naturally, Carroll stepped to the plate in the seventh inning on Tuesday night, saw a fastball above the zone at 96 mph and blasted it out to left field for a three-run...

Prosecutors in Idaho have declined to bring charges against an 18-year-old high school student who confessed to yelling a racial slur at members of the University of Utah women’s basketball team earlier this year. Authorities found “insufficient evidence to establish probable cause” that Anthony Myers had specifically intended to harass the Utes, they said in a charging document dated May 3. “[O]n the contrary,” they continued, “the sum of the evidence supports that Mr. Myers’ intent was to be funny.” The incident occurred during the team’s stay at an Idaho...

A suspect has been charged in the weekend shooting death of a 40-year-old woman in Walker County. Carlos Duran Harris, 38, of Parrish, is charged with murder in the slaying of Paula Michelle Bailey. Walker County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched early Saturday to report of a traffic crash on West Wolfe Road, just south of Jasper. When they arrived, they found the driver – Bailey - unresponsive in the driver’s seat. She had been shot. Bailey was taken to Walker Baptist Medical Center where she was pronounced dead. Investigators developed...

Jaylen Brown poured in 32 points to lead the Celtics and Derrick White hit 7 of 12 3-pointers and scored 25 points. After registering three wire-to-wire wins in their first-round win over the Heat, the Celtics led for the final 40 minutes on Tuesday. The Celtics were hardly perfect, Cleveland star Donovan Mitchell had a strong offensive game, and none of it mattered, as Boston rolled to a 120-95 win to take a 1-0 series lead. The sentiment entering these playoffs was that the Celtics were unlikely to face a...

Wake County school leaders want a record $63.2 million increase in local funding at the same time that homeowners are bracing for higher property taxes after the recent property revaluation. School board members unanimously approved a budget Tuesday that they say is needed to meet state-mandated cost increases, deal with the loss of one-time federal COVID aid and increase the amount of pay raises to employees. The budget now goes to the Wake County Board of Commissioners. County Manager David Ellis has proposed a smaller recommendation: a funding increase of...

Voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly rejected a request to issue $420 million in bonds for major facilities improvements in Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools. Roughly 8% of registered voters participated in the single-issue special election over the fate of the district’s proposal, according to unofficial results from the Wyandotte County Election Office. The measure received support from 42% of voters as 58% cast ballots against. Its failure sends district officials back to the drawing board on building new KCKPS facilities.
