Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution are investing an additional $2 billion in their battery cell manufacturing joint venture in Georgia, the state’s governor, Brian Kemp, said Thursday.

The latest funds raise the total investment value to more than $4 billion.

"This major investment will strengthen communities through good-paying jobs, improve schools and infrastructure, and much more," Kemp said.

Humans’ use of renewable resources has historically outpaced what the Earth can regenerate each year. That trend is flattening, but not fast enough, researchers say.

Wednesday is Earth Overshoot Day, the time when humanity’s demand for renewable resources and services exceeds what the Earth can restore in a year. Currently, humanity worldwide is using about 1.7 Earth’s worth of renewable resources each year. That’s three Earths by 2050, following that trajectory, according to the Global Footprint Network.

A ban on short domestic flights for journeys that can be completed in two-and-a-half hours by train was signed into law in France on Tuesday.

Clement Beaune, France’s transport minister, heralded the decree.

“This is an essential step and a strong symbol in the policy of reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” Beaune said in a statement.

“As we fight relentlessly to decarbonize our lifestyles, how can we justify the use of the plane between the big cities which benefit from regular, fast and efficient connections by train,” he added.

Flights that can be covered in under two-and-a-half hours by an equivalent train ride will no longer be allowed to operate in France.

“This is an essential step and a strong symbol in the policy of reducing greenhouse gas emissions,” the country’s Transportation Minister, Clement Beaune, said in a statement following the announcement on Tuesday.

“As we fight relentlessly to decarbonize our lifestyles, how can we justify the use of the plane between the big cities which benefit from regular, fast and efficient connections by train,” the official added.

Joe Biden will face fresh accusations of meddling in the lives of American households after his administration announced a green crackdown on dishwashers.

His Department of Energy quietly released tighter rules for the home appliances on Friday afternoon as millions of people across the country prepared to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

The annual nationwide festivities mark the anniversary of Mexico's victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862.

Native American tribes, as well as state and local governments, will be able to tap into $350 million in infrastructure funds to build wildlife corridors along busy roads and add warning signs for drivers in what federal officials are billing as the first-of-its-kind pilot program to prevent collisions and improve habitat connectivity.

The Biden administration announced on Thursday that it would be investing $343 million in enhancing tribal water resources and boosting conservation efforts across the Colorado River Basin.

More than two-thirds of that total — $233 million — will be heading to the Gila River Indian Community for water conservation projects, which will help ensure the stability and sustainability of the Colorado River for water users across the basin, according to the Interior Department.

Solar accounted for 50% of all new electricity-generating capacity added in the US in 2022, according to a new report by the Solar Energy Industries Association. Federal policies like the Solar Investment Tax Credit lowered costs for solar panel installations, and increased demand across the private and public sectors. The result is that there are now more than 140 gigawatts of solar capacity installed in the US, enough to power 25 million homes.
