Two Army helicopters from Fort Campbell crashed late Wednesday night in southwestern Kentucky during a routine training mission, causing “several” casualties, military officials said. The two HH-60 Blackhawk helicopters, part of the 101st Airborne Division, crashed around 10 p.m. Wednesday in Trigg County, Kentucky, according to a statement from Fort Campbell. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear tweeted that fatalities were expected, adding that police and emergency officials were responding.

PHOENIX — In Arizona’s most populous county, elected officials are bracing for what could happen when it comes time to replace its $2 million-a-year contract for voting equipment. Officials in Maricopa County, which includes Phoenix, say they have no concerns about their current vendor, Dominion Voting Systems. The problem is that the company has been ensnared in a web of conspiracy theories since the 2020 presidential election that have undermined public confidence in U.S. elections among conservative voters, led to calls to ban voting machines in some places and triggered...

BOSTON -- Don't let the chilly wind fool you. Baseball is in the air in Boston, with the Red Sox opening their 2023 season Thursday afternoon at Fenway Park. Following a 78-84 last place finish in 2022 -- the team's second time in the AL East basement over the past three seasons -- the expectations range between tempered and non-existent. There are question marks aplenty up and down the roster. Confidence in the starting rotation is low, and we're not quite sure what to expect out of the team's lineup....

CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico -- The death toll from a fire inside a migrant detention center rose to 39 Wednesday as hundreds of migrants began walking toward a U.S. border crossing in the belief that American authorities would let them through. The situation in the Mexican border city of Ciudad Juarez was a mix of emotions. There was anger over the deaths of migrants trapped in their cells during a smoky fire that sent guards fleeing, and there was a tearful wait for information on the condition of the nearly 30...

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Pope Francis is in the hospital Thursday morning undergoing treatment for a respiratory infection. The Vatican says the pope does not have COVID-19. The 86-year-old leader of the Roman Catholic Church has been having trouble breathing in recent days. He will spend the next few days at this hospital in Rome. In 1936, doctors removed part of a lung when he was 21 years old because of a respiratory infection. "The universal church is deeply blessed by his ministry. He is a man of deep compassion, humility,...

President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will travel to Rolling Fork, Mississippi, on Friday to assess damage and visit communities affected by deadly storms last week. Biden on Sunday declared a "major disaster" in Mississippi because of "severe storms, straight-line winds, and tornadoes from March 24 to March 25, 2023," according to a previous White House release. The Mississippi visit comes as Biden also said planning is underway for a potential visit to Nashville, Tennessee, after a mass shooting this week saw six people killed, including three children....

“From my end, I bet on my team. Some people call it cockiness, others confidence. I feel this is a good group,” Cora told the Globe’s Peter Abraham. “Do we have to be on point and is there a small margin for error? I believe so. Everybody knows it. It’s been an up-and-down few years for Boston. The 2021 run to the ALCS has been sandwiched between last-place AL East finishes. Projections don’t expect much — Fangraphs thinks the Sox will finish at .500 and outside of the playoffs. But...

Fifty years ago, the United States signed the Paris Peace Accords with the northern and southern governments of Vietnam, as well as the Viet Cong. That agreement essentially ended the nearly 20-year war in the country, freeing tens of thousands of war prisoners and bringing them home. The Virginia War Memorial in Richmond on Wednesday commemorated the anniversary by inviting veterans to the site for Vietnam War Veterans Day. The event dovetailed with the new “Fifty Years Beyond: The Vietnam War Experience” exhibit that highlights Virginian soldiers of that conflict....
