When reading balanced news on AllSides, you may see a note that our Headline Roundup news summary was AI-assisted. What does that mean?

We are using AI tools to tighten our process. Note that these tools have been carefully crafted by AllSides to reflect balance and diversity of perspective. Multiple studies indicate AI is biased to the left, increases bias in humans, and that its biases may pose a risk to democracy. 

Our editors occasionally use AllSides-developed, artificial intelligence (AI) news tools that enable us to automatically curate and create a first draft summary of top news articles for some stories, which editors then review, edit, and publish.

If we publish a roundup assisted by AI, we will attach a line reading:

Currently, we’re not using AI without human review. But occasionally we may have to, in order to keep up with the ever-hastening news cycle. If AllSides publishes content with our custom AI that hasn’t yet been reviewed by a human, we will attach a line reading:

• While the AllSides staff (of humans) write many summaries to provide you news, this summary was written by AllSides custom AI in order to provide you content more quickly, and has not yet been reviewed by a human. Let us know if something’s missing.

We will seek to make updates as needed, and will always welcome your feedback and suggestions.

AllSides is using these technologies to allow us to produce more news faster, while still keeping our balanced, multipartisan team of editors, bias analysts, and writers completely present throughout the process. Real human beings across the political spectrum will always ensure our final news product retains the accuracy, balance, and quality you know and expect from AllSides.
