Several news organizations have stopped attending the White House press briefings about the coronavirus pandemic out of health concerns and the belief that little news comes out of them.
Paul Farhi, The Washington Post's media reporter, wrote that his paper, along with The New York Times and CNBC, are no longer represented at the briefings. Those outlets are, however, watching the briefings on television and report any news.
"Nowadays, it seems they make little news," the Times' executive editor Dean Baquet said. "We, of course, reserve the right to show them live [online] if we believe they will actually make news. But that hasn't happened in quite some time."
There's also the big threat of someone contracting the COVID-19 virus while attending the briefings. The White House staff spaces out chairs and recent briefings have been held outside in the Rose Garden where there's more space. Still, there are several dozen people in relative close proximity.
Two White House correspondents were thought to have come down with the virus in recent weeks — one of them tested negative. Those two suspected cases were what prompted the aforementioned media outlets to stop attending the briefings.
The Post's executive editor Martin Baron said, "We have to keep in mind our reporters' health and those of our colleagues at other media outlets. Our reporters were in close proximity to another organization's White House reporter who was showing symptoms of the coronavirus."
During Tuesday's White House Coronavirus Task Force briefing, it was revealed that as many as 240,000 Americans could die of the disease.
